Windows 7 is the new OS after Vista.
So is it the 7th OS by Microsoft? If so what are the 1st 6?
Windows 3 I assumed this was the 3rd
Windows 95 4th?
Windows 98 Still the 4th?
Windows 2000 5th?
Windows XP 5th?
Windows ME 5th yet again?
Windows Vista 6th?
Windows 7 7th?

Windows 3.1 was first
Windows 95 2nd
Windows 98 3rd
Windows M.E. 4th
Windows XP 5th
Windows Vista 6th
And the new one is called windows 7..for now..until they come up with some stupid name.
Windows 7 will be close to Vista but not as strict. I am looking forward to it. I still like XP. OS works too good for me.

Well Windows 2000 is a update of windows NT, aint it? Windows NT was sort of for business. Then when XP came out they sort of merged it. Home and Pro. I think what GenoBaggadonuts said, it is basically on the type of kernel the OS is using.
Then again what do i know. What ever OS it is, as long as it can get porn I'm fine.

Vista was considered a bust. Too many people complained about installation and about older software and hardware not working with the OS. If you bought a new computer and had it installed it ran fine, but if you tried to install in a XP machine their where problems. That is what happened to my brother on 2 of his computers.
Since computer sales dropped the OS did not go over well. I think Microsoft sort of did it to themselves. XP works great and I never get the blue screen of death. Most people just use their computers for basic shit, so XP works fine and so they thought, why upgrade.
I heard windows 7 will be like vista but will be able to communicate with older hardware and software and when you run a program it will not ask you every time if you want to run the program. (I heard there is a way to cut that down) Microsoft try to get rid of outside company’s software, the virus scans the spyware and malware blockers.
Either way I think that with XP OS running so good, they will be sort of stuck. XP is not the greatest OS but compared to the others it runs pretty dam good. Only bad thing with XP, a lot of viruses.
Wish I had the cash I need to upgrade my computer, can't even play the new version of Bionic Command..DAMN

It was always considered a terrible OS yet I have had less problems on vista than any other Windows computer I've ever had. I don't understand what problems people are always running into. I guess I do use my mac most of the time so I don't use it as much as most. Still seems weird to me though, my experience has been great.

The biggest problem with Vista is that they redid everything from scratch and tried to keep backwards compatibility to older hardware, which caused lots of problems. Service Pack 1 fixed a bunch of things, but ultimately Windows 7 is "Windows 6.1"
And most people who know Windows history can't fathom how this is Windows 7. Your counts are stating with Windows 3.0 and 3.1, but it's not like they weren't going to create Windows 1 and 2 before 3.

Since Jon already answered the question of what version of Windows "Windows 7" is supposed to be, I thought that I'd add to the discussion of "what's this supposed to be like for users?" with a review I read recently of Windows 7:
Vista Revisited: The new version of Microsoft Windows is a lot like the old one. But better. (http://www.slate.com/id/2207756/) (Farhad Manjoo, Slate.com, posted 12/31/2008)
The reviewer mostly liked it, but there's one thing he thinks might drive die-hard Windows veterans crazy ... the loss of the taskbar.

Windows 1 and 2 actually were released, so the count starts there.
I think if you look at Microsoft's actual version numbers, 95 is 4, and 98 is 4.1 and ME is 4.5. XP is 5, and Vista is 6. Or something. You gotta do weird version number shit to get this new version to 7.

If you haven't gotten it yet, the Windows 7 beta is finally ready. Go to www.windows7.com to get it.
A note: to actually download the beta itself, you'll need to use IE, because it uses an Active X control for the download. But you can at least get the key you'll need to activate this there, and you can download from another source. Go to www.lifehacker.com to get links to direct download sites, or try a bittorrent site. Just be sure to search for "Windows 7 Build 7000" if you do that.
I'm liking it so far. But, yeah, it really does feel like Vista 2.

Weren't 1 and 2 just large scale betas that they released to a large amount of people so they could work the kinks out for 3 to come along and be a home operating system? This was a bit before my time but that was always my impression of what happened.

So I am Beta testing this for Microsoft, and I am very happy with it so far. Only one program hasn't worked with the transition, but that is a simple audio driver program. No problems so far.
The new Windows Explorer is much more thorough, and provides easy access to the most used parts of your system.
The new taskbar is really slick, and bundles programs together on the taskbar. If you have multiple windows open for the same program, and you highlight the new "icon" on the task bar it provides you with two prieview pictures of what is open in that window.
There is also a "Show Desktop" area on the task bar, instead of an Icon. If you hover over it with the mouse, all windows disappear for the time being and you can see what is on your desktop. Looks like you are seeing it through glass. Very nice.
Resource and performance has been great, and it really does feel like Windows XP with all the great looking features of the Vista.
So far I am very impressed.

I put in on my laptop, and the only real problem I've had is that it couldn't find the driver for my video card, so it's just running graphics off the standard VGA driver right now, which slows things down a touch. I'll work on it more over the weekend.
I'm also going to upgrade my desktop, which is a much faster computer, to 7 as well, trying out the Upgrade option rather than doing a clean install. I'm backing everything up to 3 or 4 different places just in case, because my experience trying to upgrade Windows rather than install fresh has not been good.

When did you install it?
It seems like anyone who upgraded in the last year or so, or bought a ready-made Vista machine had very little problems.
People who jumped on board in early 07, before the hardware vendors had a chance to work out all the kinks, ran into driver compatibility issues. Like this guy:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FVbf9tOGwno&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FVbf9tOGwno&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
The OS may be ok now, but the Vista name is soiled forever, so it's smart of Microsoft to get rid of it. I just hope they charge reasonable prices for 7 (especially as an upgrade from Vista)
They've also seen the explosion of netbook sales, and seem to be realizing the value of cheap, low-power consumption hardware. From everything I've heard, they're trying to their best to get the 7 to run on these systems. They have no choice - if they don't, people will continue using XP, or even switch to Linux because Vista simply won't run on many of those machines.
Windows 7 is sort of a hail-mary pass for Microsoft, but I think they've got the right idea.

Vista equals this generations WindowsME. it's over, johnny.
Windows 7 totally kicks ass so far.
BIG WARNING THOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you decide to upgrade your current computer to Windows 7 for the beta test, you will NOT be able to upgrade to the official release version WITHOUT a clean install. I read this in the fine print before doing the upgrade. Keep that in mind, because it will shut off in August this year.
I've yet to have a problem with Vista but mine came pre-loaded on a new machine

I just installed yesterday and so far I like the system. It is what Vista should have been.
Favorites so far:
UAC is adjustable, not just on or off. That is a huge plus.
The Apple-esque "icon bar" is easy to use and provides a preview before committing.
Much faster than Vista (and XP). I am testing on a system that is just above bare essentials and it works very well.
Desktop themes and customizations are pretty cool - I especially like the built-in slide show for your desktop.
Good start so far IMO.

Go to your Desktop, Right Click, and choose Personalize.
Choose one of the themes and choose the "Desktop Background" link that is below the theme choice box. You can then choose the picture or pictures you want to use (including system pics or personal pics), determine how they will appear (fill, stretch, center, etc.), and change set the "Change picture every" duration if you chose several (and if you want it to "shuffle").
It is a nice little feature.
I haven't tried Adobe yet, but I am not surprised that some of the mainstream programs are not ready yet since Win7 just released and only in Beta.

Me too.
Did you find the Show Desktop option? I can't even remember how I stumbled onto it, but it isn't marked.
To preview and/or show the desktop you have to go to the little, barely noticeable box to the right of the clock/calendar - it is like an "endcap" on the very end of the taskbar.
I was ticked at first and thought it was stupid placement, but now I think it makes more sense given the way the taskbar icons display and work now.

Yea that's real nice. I saw that feature a while ago. They should have little pop-ups pop up to tell ya that things like that are there. really convenient thing like that goes a long way.
It kinda bothers me, because when I go to type I normally for some reason slide my mouse down and to the right. Dunno why.
The taskbar icon section is nice too, but I do have a hard time seeing some of the lighter colored icons in there.

Guess what, we've got our first sighting of a security flaw in Windows 7. It's in the new User Access Control feature. It's meant to be less intrusive than UAC was in Vista, but that's led to a tiny issue: malware can turn it off completely without your permission.
The solution is simple: go into UAC settings and turn it all the way up, which means it'll work pretty much like it did in Vista. Here's details on how to do it:

My system had a hell of a time reading it too. In fact, I couldn't actually boot from the disk. However, since I was putting it on a separate partition and dual-booting, I was able to start the installation from my active OS (which could read the disk) and point the install to the partition I wanted.

Did that - used all of the normal tricks but it wouldn't boot from the disk. However, I was not installing Windows 7 on a Primo machine; it is a hacked together monstrosity that I am just using for testing. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if it ends up being a hardware issue.

But, yeah, this is not wise.
