It happened for the 1st time yesterday. My girlfriend and I got scared when I self diagnosed myself online. I'm 50 and a non-drinker/smoker. I got my PSA number and it was low around 2. That was about a month ago. Thanks for your time Doc-Steve.

Hey barjockey!

blood in the semen is called "hematospermia" and in 50% of cases, the cause is never found. Most urologists will treat it with a course of antibiotics after doing a routine physical exam. If it doesn't resolve in a month or two, they can do a complete workup.

Causes include: broken blood vessel in the spermatic cords, prostate infection, prostate stones, lesions in the urethra (penis tube), and a few other things. Prostate cancer occurs in less than 2% of cases of hematospermia, though one study found that men with the condition had twice the risk of developing prostate cancer as the general population.

So get it checked, but don't lose any sleep over it. If your PCP isn't comfortable dealing with it, have him/her send you to a urologist.
