I haven't read comics in years (like 10-15 years)

Make a pull list for me of things to check out. I used to be heavy into X-Men when I was younger.

I'm just keeping to superhero books, since you were an X-Men fan...

Captain America
Astonishing X-Men
Justice League
Batman
Detective Comics

And if you're willing to expand beyond superheroes, trying anything by Brian K. Vaughn is a great start. Y: The Last Man is great but has 2 issues left. Ex Machina is Mojo's favorite comic.

I was never big into comics when I was younger, just the occasional X-Men read mostly. Someone on this board had a Spider Jerusalem quote in their sig about 6 years ago, and that's how I found out about Transmetropolitan. I loved it. I started reading The Watchmen, and so far so good. And don't forget to check out the Wolverine story, Origin.

These are more along the lines of graphic novels. If you're feeling open minded you should check them out.

i was in the same position as you a a year ago.
Reading the new Dare Devil's made me want to read comics again.

It's called Dare Devil Version 2, some of the early ones have some heavy religious undertones, they were written by kevin smith, but are still really good, i'd read all of those...it's 87 issues, but you'll tear through em. Also all the newer batman stuff is enjoyable, really great artwork in both of these series.

batman, the long halloween is really good, also the superman-batman series is good....but not the all star superman batman, ugh. batman hush is pretty interesting, and Knightfall, though i'm not a huge fan of how they portray him in these, it still sets up a lot of the newer batman stuff.

May as well throw Dark Victory in there as well.

I'd say read V for Vendetta, but if you've seen the movie then the comic is nearly identical....does give some new insight though.

Iron Man Extremis is good, and i never really liked iron man so that says a lot for the series.

I enjoy the darker comics a bit more, seems a little more mature...and makes me feel less guilty for reading them.

My friend who got me back into comics likes valiant comics a bit, but i've never read any.

Oh yeah, stephen kings gunslinger is good stuff too, and ichi the killer, sort of perverse but a good story.

House of M and the Civil war to catch you up. There are both in trades so you can pick up each series for like 15 bucks.

Wasteland
Wolverine (Of Course given your history)

Brian K Vaughan's and Pia Guerra's "Y The Last Man" series is one of the most intellegent, well drawn and riviting comics out there . Pretty funny in its own wry way as well. The individual issues have thus far been compiled into 9 graphic novels, and I think the 10th one wraps up the story.

And to mirror Iampixie, Portland's own Craig Thompson is a class act, though I think I prefer his "Goodbye Chunky Rice." Clever and sweet. Kind of the diametric opposite of a superhero comic.

ive gotten back into comics in the last year or so and these are the ones that i have enjoyed the most, even though some have already been mentioned:

y: the last man - had me hooked after reading the first 5 pages. i read all nine volumes within a week and a half.

walking dead - very cool portrayal of zombies, story mostly focuses on the group and their emotions trying to survive.

30 days of night - i love the concept of this storyline, ive read 3 of the volumes so far, still trying to find the second one. i love the art in it.

batman - long halloween - my favorite of the batman volumes

i fucking love that guy.

seriously though, to recommend we'd need to know what you like...unless you want blind recommendations from online assholes?

and when did you stop paying attention?

personally I really enjoyed criminal / the walking dead / Yurich the last man / daredevil /

Some of the batman superman stuff is good too, along with the detective comics.

i also made the mistake of reading Drafted, which is an ongoing series...getting into ongoing series sucks...

but none of this really matters if you were into archie and jughead, or valiant or something.......

EliSnow
02-02-2008, 05:27 AM
Diablo, do you want to read ongoing comics or those series in trade paperback/"graphic novels"?

For the latter, I've recommended the following to Phish: Planetary, Hellboy, Astonishing X-Men, Astro City, Fables, Captain America by Ed Brubaker, Green Lantern by Geoff Johns, starting with Green Lantern: Rebirth. These series are more recent series (last 5-10 years).

For ongoing series, again, Captain America and Green Lantern are ongoing and are incredible. In fact for both series, the current run may be the greatest those heroes have seen in their history (it's like reading Daredevil when Frank Miller was writing it or Claremont writing the Dark Phoenix storyline or Days of Future Past). Justice Society of America is really, really great. The recent Messiah CompleX in the X-books is the best X-Men story other than Astonishing X-Men in the last 10-15 years if not more.

Of course, there's also Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina by the show's budday Brian K. Vaughan. Y just ended, but most of the series is in TPB.

I would have to agree with all of Eli's suggestions, Fables in particluar is top notch.
I would also add Sleeper by Brubaker. It wrapped up a few years ago but you can find the trades.

There is a new company called Red 5 comics that has 4 or 5 titles out. They are all pretty sweet. They are all at issue 3 or earlier so you can jump on pretty easy.

Invincible by Image is always a fun read. Buy the trades and get caught up, I would say that is my favorite super hero tittle out right now.

My last suggestion would be to pick up the trades for all of Loeb and Sales Batman stuff, Long Halloween etc.. Its pretty much the best Batman stuff ever.

ToLEEdo

word on Eli's suggestions.

Also they just wiped clean most of Spiderman's back story and restarted with Brand New Day. They are only a couple of books into it. That would be a cool story to get into if you hadn't read the old stuff.

Also, try wikipedia to get the back story for characters and storylines you don't know.

Fucking faggot American who lives in his mom's basement. Yiou should give up on comic books queer

well if there's anything worse than a comic fan, it's a fan of Tiger Ali from a shit nintendo game system. I mean, to embrace a horrible video game character, to the point where you adopt the character's traits, is pretty fuckin sad. (traits which you've embellished upon, by more than his one sentence rambles between rounds)But that's ok, because everyones made for a reason, except folks like you, which just shows hey, anyone can make a mistake in the birthing process.

And read Criminal, it's awesome, but are you looking for monthly's or trade paper backs, what exactly?

I'm in the same boat as Diablo. And I'm not trying to highjack his thread.:smoke:

I'll be making my way to my local book/comic store soon, as I'm going to have a lot of time on my hands.

I' guess I'm looking for something more on the lines of a graphic novel.
Something I'm not going to have to buy 50 books to get to the end of a storyline.

I dabbled in Spiderman and Batman, but I guess my favorites from back in the day(early 90's for me) woud be X-Men/Excalibur(Nightcrawler).
I'd also be into something a little more "dark"/real life.(haven't read it, but I guess I'm thinking of something along the lines of The Watchmen[which I plan on getting])

Also, I was wondering if anyone could give me any suggestions on some post Star Wars: Return of the Jedi novels I could check out.(now we're really gonna nerd this thing up:tongue:)
Again something that might wrap up in 4-5 novels.
I've heard something about the Thrawn series, but I don't know what novels that entails.
(I didn't think this warranted a whole new thread, that's wahy I didn't start one):smoke:

Watchmen is a must-read/must-have.

If you're into more "dark"/"real life" comics, try Transmetropolitan ... you don't have to worry about getting a graphic novel and having to catch up because it's finished its run and all the issues are collected into 10 graphic novels. Spider Jerusalem and his Filthy Assistants are the best.

I've enjoyed the few issues of Y: The Last Man that I read...thanks Sheepy... as well as Ex Machina, despite my preference for superhero books.

I would also recommend Superman: Red Son and Last Son of Krypton in addition to Batman: Year One ... we only read the best, right?

Unfortunately, I'm about to be in the exact oppisite situation.

I'm going to be getting laid off in the next few months.
After that, hopefully, I'll be having surgery to fix what ever is wrong with my knee.
It could be a few moths before I'm able to find another job, depending on what I tore, so I will most likely be having a good deal of time on my hands to get into some reading/watching of films I have never seen.

I'm already stocked up on movies, so now I just need some reading material.

I will check up on these. Are both the first ones by brian K. Vaughn(sp??)??

I will definitely check out the Batman, but I never really got into the Superman stuff.
Is "Red Son" the thing where he grows up in the U.S.S.R.????
That I could see myself getting into.

Thanks again.

Thebazile78

Transmetropolitan is a Darick Robertson/Warren Ellis creation.
Watchmen is Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons.

Y: The Last Man is Brian K. Vaughan/Pia Guerra.
Ex Machina is Brian K. Vaughan/Tony Harris.

Red Son is the one where Supes lands on a commune in the USSR and grows up in Stalin's shadow. Very clever story; I've recommended it before.

I wasn't always into Batman myself, but I've read some good storylines. Two of my favorites are Batman: Gothic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Gothic) and Batman vs. Predator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_versus_Predator) ...

If you're looking for darker team books, try The Authority by Warren Ellis (others have written it, but you have to start with Ellis' run), and both volumes of the Ultimates (which is a darker version of the Avengers).

These books more than any others are like watching movies.

You might enjoy the supremeverse stuff since you enjoy green lantern.

Have you read no mans land? Good stuff for batman fans, also Superman Batman.

I love the new captain america winter soldier deal and Daredevil as well, everything after the Kevin Smith era has been pretty solid.

Also Iron Man extremis was cool.
Wanted was a much better comic then movie.

Also ongoing series like Walking Dead, and Invincible, Doktor Sleepless, Black Summer, Drafted, No Hero, Kick Ass, Ex Machina.

I hadn't read a comic in my adult life till a friend insisted I read daredevil, now I've read thousands of books it seems, there's a ton of good stuff to catch up on.

Green Lantern is my favorite too.

JSA was really good, and although the follow-up title Justice Society of America started slow, it picked up speed after the first dozen issues or so.

All-Star Superman is great, and the Elseworlds series Superman: Red Son is top-notch.

The new Booster Gold series is also good IMO.

The Walking Dead is a great series, even if depressing at times.

Eli's suggestions are really solid, although I am still catching up on some.

Wolvie: The Claremont/Miller miniseries. Or you can hit up the Essential Wolverine trades for his Madripoor adventures. Weapon X by Barry Windsor Smith is good too.

For batman Knightsquest, Knights End, Cataclysm, Aftershock, Road to no mans land, and no mans land, Dark Victory.

If you liked winter soldier, i seriously think you'd enjoy Daredevil, The Marvel Knights stuff was good, starting with issue 54, which some refer to as version 2 #1...its all really good and is what got me into comics...

I'm partial to Batman v. Predator, Gotham by Gaslight and the story with the underground and the ghost of the nun, but for fuck's sake I can't think of the fucking story's name!!! (But I know the art panel-for-panel. Fucked up, I know, but I went through a number of years thinking that THAT one was GBG and felt like a moron when I learned it wasn't.)

Other than that, I'm primarily a Superman reader. (I loved Red Son and Last Son of Krypton ... and pretty much anything from the 60's that my dad had in his collection. Can't remember if I've read Superman for All Seasons, but think that I may have. My brain is scrambled at the moment.)

Props to the folks who suggested Ex Machina. Good book; I need my own copies because it takes me FOREVER to return them to my brother.

Have also read Authority comics ... good deal. (Kid I dated in college was into Authority, Planetary, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Transmet & Sin City.) Can definitely recommend them.

Need to catch up on both Fables and Y: The Last Man ... in addition to completing my Wonder Woman collection. (Sue me. I like Wonder Woman. When I was a little kid, I wanted to be Lynda Carter. Just ask my parents how many times a week they needed to launder my Wonder Woman Underoos...)

Lastly, although I need to figure out how many more TPB's I need to complete my collection, I will highly recommend Transmetropolitan. Unless, of course, you're a superhero comic person rather than an antihero comic person.

Gotham by Gaslight was put into a trade last year with some other Batman Elseworld stories. All good.

There was also a trade of the three Elseworlds Batman/Dracula that were cool.

For Wolverine books try out the main series starting with issue 66 that came out last summer. I'm not a big fan of the writer, but he's pulling off some interesting stuff. It's based in the future so it will be good for you to read since it's not continuity heavy.

I'll also second(third?) the recommendation for the Walking Dead. It's my favorite monthly series.

I like Millar's stuff a lot. Wanted, Chosen, Swamp Thing, Ultimates, Superman Adventures, Red Son, Civil War...he's done some good stuff. And also Trouble and The Unfunnies. But that's a pretty good track record!

walking deads great, i re-read the whole thing up to the most recent a couple weeks ago, it's funny how little time has really past for the story...but those 65 issues has taken forever.

next month would be a great time to hop on board since it's the end of the "hunters" storyline.

just noticed valiant comics are missing from your list, i'd have to recommend Harbinger, and about the first 10-11 miraclemen are all good.

I've been re-reading Daredevil when I have time, the bendis/brubaker run are so good, i'm always amazed at how little people talk about that book.

Yeah. The new 52 (as they keep calling it) started last week with Justice League #1. This week DC debuted a bunch of new (and rebooted) titles, and every week this month more new titles will come out.
This week I picked up Action Comics #1; Detective Comics #1; Batgirl #1; and Justice League International. So far, I like what I'm reading. JLI was surprisingly entertaining good read.

Other #1 titles that came out this week were Green Arrow; Batwing; Hawk & Dove; Animal Man; Men of War; O.M.A.C.; Static Shock; Stormwatch; and Swamp Thing.

I know there are a bunch of comic fans out there who are skeptical about this "reboot" of the DC Universe. But for me, I'm keeping an open mind.

i've really been enjoying most of the new 52. but yeah, JLI was complete dreck and i haven't heard many good things about stormwatch. top books for me are animal man, all-star western, action, wonder woman, and swamp thing.

it's the extra pages of designs and commentary from morrison and morales. i know in some of the future issues, those 8 pages are going to be a backup story. a steel backup from joshua hale fialkov will be in either issue 3 or 4.

We have a Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art here in San Francisco too! I go there at least once a month. They had an awesome exhibit on Berke Breathed two months ago. It's small, but if you're ever in the area and like that sort of thing, you should check it out.

P.S I took the survey, but I wasn't much help, since I didn't know the museum even existed before today. Good luck!

Frank Millers Holy Terror

Imagine Sin City and All star Batman having an abortion, Take anything good from those 2 series throw them away and you have these piece of crap

DC rightly so wouldn't let Miller use Batman for this junk but that didn't stop Miller from giving us Empire City, The Fixer, Cat Burglar, and a non corrupt police captain in a corrupt city as the main characters all really thinly veiled versions of the DCU

Maybe if Miller released this before Team 6 took out UBL it might be different but not much

i have zero problem with what DC is doing. will these stories live up to the original? highly doubtful, but the comics industry is floundering and trying to do just about anything to garner some sales. i can understand why moore and others are upset but it's not like this was a creator owned series and ownership has always been held by DC. i know there are some squabbles between DC and moore about this with something to do with ownership once the series went out of print, which it never did.

some pretty good creative teams on these new series as well.

brian azzarello & lee bermejo on rorshach
darwyn cooke writing and illustrating the minutemen
brian azzarello & jg jones on the comedian
among several others...

i'm most looking forward to the minutemen series by cooke. here is the initial cover for it:
