now that we are in 09 we can start looking back at the decade that was.

best game: fallout 3
best mmorpg: world of warcraft
best sports game: mlb the show 08

although its a franchise, fallout it great by itself and for me is the gold standard by which all other games will be judged from this point on, as good as good gets

i know world of warcraft may be the rube pick but it brought an entire culture into mmorpg and made them accessible for non mmo players (the safe pick for its category)

GTA: Vice City
Max Payne
MLB High Heat '05
MVP Baseball '03
NFL 2k6

Not because they are great but because I think
those are the only games I have played for more than an hour since 2000.
Not really sure on the years of the BB and FB games, but I think I am close.

I played ten seasons of High Heat over a period of two years.

This depends on what your criteria is.

Wii Sports changed the way sports games will be played for the foreseeable future (if you don't think Microsoft and Sony won't try to adapt some form of motion control in the future, you're crazy).

That said, it's not a particularly great sports game.

But, on impact alone, it's probably the best of the decade.

MGS4 for pure awesomeness, this year and for the entire series

COD4 for addictive and innovative online play

WOW for having more addicts than heroin (though I've never played)

Halo for being a standout in the genre

As much as I'd like to, I wouldn't throw in GTA or Gran Turismo since I don't think they stand up. They were great but so tedious.

I have to throw in Guitar Hero for making video games a group activity, and bringing girls into the fold

Thats because you are a guy & nobody is getting shot at or killed. This is a game just to chill with. collect shells get lots of bells buy some shit go to other towns & just relax. The most violent this game gets is when you push the other town folk around they yell at you sometimes.

I've always found The Sims games to be a little overrated.

After that...I'm not so sure I've really played too many others. There's a bunch of Virtual Pet type games, but I'd have to turn in my heterosexual card with purchase of them.

Animal Crossing isn't bad.

Harvest Moon is pretty good, too, but the best HM game, for me, is still the SNES one. Although I have a copy of one of the GameCube versions sitting on my desk waiting to be played as soon as I can find a memory card.

GTA Vice City was HUGE for me when it came out. My apartment was full of people daily playing it. I had friends that wouldn't go to class to hang out and play it.

Gears of War is probably my favorite shooter of all time.

Sales are one thing but thats only because of the saturation of the game consoles now, and most people played vice city and is more recognized as a named title, personally I hated san andreas, it was really over rated and started the repetitive gameplay.

Wasn't a big fan of San Andres either. Entirely too big, some of the distances you had to cover for missions could literally take 15 minutes just to reach the main objective where said mission actually started. I actually don't think I even bothered to beat that game because became so exhaustive just to complete missions.

I know Hockey doenst win in popularity but NHL 09 is the most hands on sports game ive ever played. You can design your own plays and when theres only 5 players out there you dont feel like you have lost control of the game because of your somputer teammates. Thats why I lost interest in Madden.
