Barring injury, and the call of Hollywood, count on the Rock staying around for another 10 years or so. They're going to milk everything they can out of him, and I don't see him getting stale to the fans any time soon.
There's some backlash against the Rock amongst the smart fans, though. He's a solid worker, but he rarely every changes his character (as opposed to Stone Cold, who totally reinvented himself when he was a heel earlier this year) and his moveset seems somewhat limited. But the guy sells like a champ and is willing to put other guys over when they need it (unlike SOME people in the WWF), so I think it all balances out.

Goddess, you obviously are not the only one thinking along the same lines. The Rock aka The Crock in many smark circles sadly, will not discipate as long as he has his overrated catchphrases and that pathetic "People's Elbow."
At first he was fun and entertaining now it's just too repetitive! He also needes to work on applying the Sharpshooter correctly. I'd love to see Bret or Sting lock that bad boy on him as blood crimson slowly cascades over his face. I'd stick that on my wall! Terrible wrestler but as Se7en has said he sells like no other, that I give to him but his acting is usually way over the top though.
His fans are growing, hun, just grin and bear it...

hatetreehighway, has a point. As long as "sports-entertainment" exists there will always be the Rock around spouting off his nonsense.
but on the same token, I can not get enough of Austin's "WHAT?" trademark phrase?
<marquee> WHAT?!? WHAT?!? WHAT?!? WHAT?!? </marquee>
It's so much fun to say, not sure if I'll get tired of that but I said that about the Rock originally too. Hmmm...

Next time, listen to the cheers for the Rock. They're a lot higher pitched than say Stone Cold's because most of Rocky's fan base are the women. That's why Rocky is so over.
but on the same token, I can not get enough of Austin's "WHAT?" trademark phrase?
So you're one of those tools who does it during <b>every</b> promo now, huh? ;)

whenever i get too sick of the rock i throw on some of my corporate champion tapes or early Nation of domination stuff and i remember that he was one of my favorite heels ever. everyone hated him and it was the best. he's the money heel, his face stuff will never be as good. overall he's great for the sport, not Y2J great but great.
it's true,
it's damn true!

Oh come on now. I don't quite think it's fair to put Rock in the same boat as Hogan. Rock is, IMO, a better worker than Hogan ever was, he actually sells AND jobs for people (not everyone, sure, but he's already put over more people than Hogan ever has), and unlike Hogan, he's been in at least one 5 star match. The Rock may be no Chris Benoit in terms of ability in the ring, but he's better than Hogan.
As for the What?! stuff....I loved it. Up until the goddamn marks got cute with it and started doing it at every other word that comes out of someone's mouth during a promo segment. Way to overkill it, tools.

Here's my lingo (and you can find this used elsewhere on the net).
The "marks": Your average wrestling fan. Nothing wrong with that, since they are the ones who are mainly buying the product. Those are the ones who I was referring to as saying "What?!" 8 billion times per promo, because they think it's a nice catchphrase. These were the same kinds of people who, a few years back, were doing crotch chops with DX. Mark behavior can be fun...but occasionally annoying. I mean, I think it's cool that Austin's new phrase has carried over from his heel turn and is popular now, but when it's done SO much every broadcast, to me it approaches overkill.
Then there are the Smarks, or "smart marks", aka smart fans. Those are the ones who go beyond just standard fan behavior, and actually engross themselves in the insides of the business. They're the *really* diehard fans. They know more of the "real story" behind the storylines and characters, or at least try to. For example: Wrestlemania 4. From a mark perspective, we saw Randy Savage win his first WWF title. From the smark perspective, we see him win the title because the Honky Tonk Man refused to job the IC strap to him, and so the WWF was forced to elevate him as their top babyface as a result (instead of sticking him in the midcard). A smark could probably tell you the circumstances of the story which led to the Savage title reign. Smarks usually try to be more knowledgable of the business than the marks, who are more inclined to not nitpick the small details and are just content to accept the program at face value and enjoy it.
So, I don't consider "mark" and "smark" to be the same entity.
BTW, I consider most of you to be smarks. ;)
