Hey Dr. Steve,
With all the eating and stuffing myself over the holidays I'm looking to clean myself out. Can you recommend a good detox? I looking for one of those total system cleansing deals.
Thanks

The whole "detox" thing is an interesting question. A lot of people put stock in the idea that since feces is gross and it's held inside your body, that somehow it must leach toxins into the body...toxins that need to be removed somehow. So some people recommend high colonics, or "colon blow" regimens to clean out the bowel and "detoxify" everything. The concept of autointoxication has been debunked in the literature, however. Turns out your colon was designed to contain disgusting fecal matter and does this so well that no "toxins" leak out of it (unless you ate them and they were absorbed). There are no accretions, no globs of parasites, no leathery constructs...that's all just made up. I've said this before somewhere...anyone who has seen a colonoscopy knows that the inside of the bowel is just lovely pink mucus membrane. Oh, and a few pounds of turds, too.
Your liver works really hard every day to break down toxic substances and get them out of the body; your kidneys do that too. Stuff like DDT (a pesticide from the 60s) NEVER leaves your body, though (or it breaks down really slowly), and no one has really come up with a way to flush that kind of stuff out.
If you're constipated, it's ok to use a laxative every once in awhile to clean yourself out; if you're on a low-fiber diet, take the opportunity to change your lifestyle a bit and increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables after a good cleansing. this will prevent the need for future "detoxification"! I recommend Citrucel as a fiber supplement. It's tasty (tastes like TANG), and doesn't cause bloating and gas like Metamucil does.
People who want to give themselves an enema from above (much nicer than sticking a tube up your ass) can use a fleet's phosphosoda (the same thing NoFilter Paul used to shit himself on O&A), or drink a bottle of Magnesium Citrate. I would NOT recommend doing this without a doctor's input, as not everyone should do this. also, using them regularly is not a good idea. Once every 6 to 12 months is probably safe for most people. Read my thread on the dreaded colonoscopy (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=71525) for more on what to expect with these things.
Hope this helps.
your pal,
steve

Raw veg (no potatoes) for three days, with only water for drinks. I did this to start a "detox" diet. I didn't have much faith in it's detoxyness until I saw the shits that came out. On the 3rd day I puked and felt like garbage, felt great the day after.

You can't actually get phosphosoda anymore without a prescription. Fleet recalled it two weeks ago after the FDA ruled that some people who used it for bowel cleansing were hurting their kidneys in the process. you may have already known this! :king:

I actually didn't know that; I'm not surprised, though...I always thought PhosphoSoda was pretty powerful stuff to just have out on the counter for anyone to misuse. :-) I'll check into this further and thanks for the info!

Ha, I wish! Citrucel is just one of those perfect things...it does what it's supposed to do, and does it well. Most people have never heard of it, though; Metamucil has done a much better job of marketing.

A sack of White Castle cheese burgers my friend....it takes about 3 days to work itself through but it takes everything else inside you with it.
