it is her old work computer she rarely used. turning it on bring me to the "log on" window which is requiring a password, after exhausting all possible options of the passwords she uses we can't get onto it.

is there a way to get around this, or is this computer locked to me without the correct pasword?

get a copy of windows xp install disc.
If you dont have a copy, there are places you can get a backup copy.

what freitag said was basically use the xp install and choose "format drive" before installing.
that is only good if you don't care about the software on it.

The title was a compromise between two suggestions: one using binary code and one saying "Mom's Basement" (implying that the forum posters lived in their mom's basement.

Then it will go through about an hour of self-writing and at the end will walk you through setting up the use accounts.

Then get ready to sit some more because Windows Update will want to download another couple of hours worth of updates depending on the age of the installer discs you're using.

Also, just to "Get in" you could always start in "Safe Mode."
Just keep hitting the F8 key as you start the computer. It will eventually start beeping at you and bring you to a screen where it asks you how you want to boot the comp. Use the arrows to select "Safe Mode." You won't have full functionality, but you can see what's on the comp and I'm not sure on security but you may be able to do something about the password shit.

Here's what yo do:

1) get into Computer's set up when it's booting. Usually by hitting f2, f10, or del - depending on what brand.

2) This gets you into the computer's BIOS

3) Set the "boot order" to go to the CD drive first instead of the hard drive.

4) Get XP install disc.

5) Put XP install disc in.

6) Comp will ask if you want to re-format the hard drive. YES. and do a full re-format, not a "quick" reformat.

7) Install XP.

8) Then find all the drivers for stuff you need. Usually found on the computer maker's website. Enter the model number, you should get a list of drivers.

9) Done.
