The one thing that stands out about NY to me is, The food that is sold on the streets.
I mean i've seen it on tv and in movies but you guys REALLY DO sell food on the street.
1st question: WHy is it sold on the street?

2nd: is'nt that dirty?

Dirty water dogs aren't what they used to be, althogh you can still find some guys who take pride and serve up a good one. And of course, there's the gyros to be had, and the pretzels, and I've even seen a baked potato cart.
But believe it or not, New York has nothing on Philly when it comes to food on the street. You can get every kind of cusine you can imagine out of a cart or the side of a truck down there. Every kind of Asian, Italian, Mexican, Indian, salads, burgers, steaks... whatever. And they're all over, too.

<br>Have a wonderful holiday season.

I like going to the fruit sellers on the street. And I see the pretzle guys and the coffee/bagel guys only at certain times during the day.

Speaking of dirty food, I just read an article about the best grease pits in Jersey. Among the favs: Jimmy Buff's in West Orange and the Grease Trucks at Rutgers (sorry, more outdoor food).

For those who don't know, Jimmy Buff's makes the heart-attack-on-a-bun: deep fried hot dogs. The article even mentions the cook with the sponge strapped to his forehead.

I have always enjoyed an occasional dirty water dog, but NYC has so much more varieties of outdoor botulis...em..I mean food. There are taco stands, Indian food stands, Italian Sausage Carts and just about everything you can imagine (philly is not the only city with varieties of outdoor food vendors)

What really makes me puke is the Coffee/Bagel Carts. The coffee isn't so bad, but the bagels are atrocious. In the City of New York, where bagels became an American tradition, we have people selling lumps of dough and marketing them as "Bagels" eeeyuucchh!!! This is heresy and it must be stopped!!!

1. Why is it sold on the street? Cuz as pedestrians we are more likely to prefer not to walk into restaurants for a quick bit when there is a street vendor on the sidewalk, much shorter lines and normally the prices are cheaper, except in Manhattan when I bought a pretzel for $3 dollars (like in stadiums buut that is a different story unto itself).

2. Isn't that dirty? Most definitely it is. The water is terrible and since watching those specials on ABC and NBC in New York I have stopped buying from teh vendors. I still might pick up a soda or water by them though. BTW, I keep a small bottle of "Purrell" hand sanitizer with me to wash off the "street funk."

3. What's the city's electric bill? Can you say, you have to send the bill to NASA? Time Square alone can probably light up Springfield for years! Just some light for thought, :)--lol.

To me those pretzels seem to be sprayed with water, dipped in a block of salt and burned to give you something edible.

that tastes funny to me.

Does anyone go to the nuts stands?

Apparantly many disagree with me on this, but I think you'd have to be nuts to eat anything sold by a food vendor on the street.

The proprietors are walking colonies of festering disease and they handle the food. Uggh.

The Grease Trucks from Rutgers- are they still around? I remember them getting pushed off of College Ave when I was at RU.

Some of these vendors in the city do look scary. I pass 3 donut/coffee stands walking up 41st and 42nd street. We could make a fortune selling penicillin and disinfectant right next to some of those stands.

I will admit, though, nothing beats a good DW dog.

I agree with you Horde King. I will never be eating from those vendors again.

You have to be nuts (no pun intended) to even fathom to eat from those germ carrying wheeled vehicles.

I'm with you on this one, HK...The very thought of eating from a food handler who has no access to running water and soap and is handling money all day is enough to make me ill. YUCK!!!
