Hey Dr.Steve,
Since 2 days ago, I'm experiencing a burning sensation when I pee. And I don't have medical coverage right now so I know seeing a doc would cost money. Anything I can do at home?
P.S. I know we talked about dieting before. You will be happy to know I've been dieting for a month now and doing great. 28lbs lost and counting. I'm doing Tae Bo at home. I'm also blogging about it each night online.

You can try 100% cranberry juice to rule out a UTI.
There's a compound in cranberries that makes it very unpleasant to bacteria to stay where it is.
If you suspect an STI, try to get an appointment with Planned Parenthood (yes, really) or check if there's a free clinic run out of your local hospital, especially if you're in a sexual relationship.
I think that most hospitals also have "charity care" programs to cover treating the uninsured, so figure out whether hospitals near you have them. It's not the ideal way to treat stuff like this, but it's better than leaving it alone!

Nick: First off, congrats on the 28 lbs! Remember, for every 35 pounds you gain an inch of penis size, so you're well on your way to having your own "Boogie Nights" moment! Wait..."Nicky" is a guy-name, right? If you're a girl, you won't get any salutary effects on penis size, sorry.
On to the burning when you pee (called "dysuria" by the medical profession)...and for this, I'm assuming you're male (sorry..."Nicky" is like "Pat", just hard to tell 100%, though statistically if you're posting on this board I'd have a 90% chance of being right if I just guess 'male').
This can be caused by a bladder infection, but honestly, guys don't get those that often. It's more likely caused by an irritation of the urethra, called "urethritis". There's "specific urethritis" which just means we can determine the cause...often a sexually transmitted disease, and there's also "nonspecific urethritis", which just means it's some crap-ass bacteria that annoys but doesn't do much else. The good news is that both are treatable with the same antibiotic. Prostate infection (prostatitis) can cause burning when you pee, too. Again treatable with the same antibiotic as the other two.
If you have a good relationship with your doctor, he/she may just call you in the antibiotic and be done with it. Otherwise, you may be in for a urine test, a prostate check, and possibly a urethral swab (Qtip up the pee hole). Total cost will be around $150-200, BUT you can probably get this for free from your local health department!
If you have fever, chills, rash, you need to see someone immediately and forget about the bill until later.
hope this helps. let me know how it turns out.
your pal,
steve
