View Full Version : Neti Pots
How great are neti pots? How often is it safe to use them? I want to use it all the time. It's like an orgasm inside my nose.

Dr. Steve loves the neti pot, dude.
Read this post here (responding to a post about seasonal allergies):

And, yeah, he likes the photos.
(I can't get over the fact that a neti pot has a narrow spout, so I use Simply Saline brand saline nasal spray myself. Works the same way.)

What Bazile said. :-) Thanks for keeping an eye on the forum while I was away!
:-)
Is it safe to use it every day Doc?
Is there any danger in using it too much?
I have to know!

I get sinus infections every so often. But my nose isn't stuffed, it runs. Can I use it for that?

sure, but are you on anything for this? runny nose can be an allergic phenomenon, too...antihistamines and/or nasal steroids can be used to help with this. Have you talked to your primary care provider? let me know what you've tried.

well, everything in moderation, my friend. :-)
there's some risk of aspirating salt water with these things (getting the fluid into your lungs because you're uncoordinated) but even then inhaling a little salt solution is easily dealt with by the body (since mucus is just thickened salt-water in the end anyway).
there are people who use these things every day; just make sure the salt solution you use is properly made (or a commercial variety)...if it's the right concentration there's very little downside to using it every day.
your pal,
steve
I collect awful neti pot photos...here's a new one:

though this one will always remain my favorite, for some reason:

What is this phenomenon?
Where you flushed your sinuses two days ago for the first time and now it feels like there's a tennis ball lodged between your eyes from all the congestion?

In the last 3 weeks I've taken 3 Benadryl Allergy caplets. For some odd reason I've been getting sinus headaches. I usally only get them in the spring and fall.

Would I give you bad advice, Keithy? NEVER!
Use it in good health brother.
Dear Doc. Steve .com,
Is it OK if my Mom says that my Uncle Tommy uses the Neti Pot to much?
She says that Uncle Tommy is to "Touchy Feely" I think that I just can't talk about it to much. That's all.
Is it OK to touch myself while using the Neti Poty?
Signed,
Rube

There are different styles. I broke my nose years ago in a car accident. The right side of my nose is smaller than the left side. I'm just wondering about the size of the spout.

I think the Ram's horn design (the first pic Dr. Steve posted) would be best for you if you're concerned about the size of the spout, Res. All the other types have you actually inserting the spout into your nostril, whereas with the ram's horn the end is bulbous and just rests against your nostril.

You're pouring saline in one nostril and it goes through the entire sinus cavity and flows out the other side. It cleans your sinuses and moistens the lining of your nasal passages.

ok, instead of starting a new thread I thought I'd put the paddles to a previously started re. neti pots
I have shitty nasal allergies triggered by the usual suspects i.e. dust, mold and my favorite the girlfriends evil cat. Broke down this evening and picked one up. While yes my nose briefly felt better and less contested I seemed to be dripping water from my right nostril for 10 minutes afterwards. Is this normal?

In my experience it takes a while for your sinuses to adjust...especially if they're all inflamed from allerigies 'n stuff. I have been using a squeeze bottle with "NeilMed Nasal Rinse" for going on two years. Before using it I was a chronically stuffy... Now the thing works like it's supposed to. I'm not religous about doing it ... usually 4-5 times a week and always use boiled or distilled water with the rinse...but damn it has made a signifigant difference in my life.
Highly suggest you do it for at least a few weeks b4 deciding if its for you
