One of the rare times where Keanu being cast might actually be a good thing.
Jennifer Connelly was the only interesting thing in that trailer.

Why ? Do you hate your Dad ?

Same thing here... Since I was a kid I remember my father calling Patricia Neal a stupid ass when she has to say "Gort! Klaatu barada nikto!"
I'll probably see this.

I watched this trailer earlier today and I was thinking about how you can make a movie about how if man kind doesn't change their ways they're going to destroy the world, but you cant remakea movie about that, cus obviously we didn't kill ourselves the first time.

Since the vid above doesn't seem to be working, here is a new link (http://teaser-trailer.com/2008/07/day-earth-stood-still-trailer.html).
The original is one of my absolute favorites. I am looking forward to this, but am also keeping it completely separate (in my mind), from the Classic version.
This is obviously going to be a radically different vision since the original was made more than 55 years ago, and the world is a completely different place. What scares us now was probably unimaginable to most people in the 1950's.

I liked this shot - Giants Stadium. Destroyed. Go Eagles!
And I really like the music used in the trailer.

The original from 1951 is one of the all time great sci-fi films....it is a film of ideas and the idea is so powerful it definately deserves to be remade....
I usually don't have a problem with Keanu because he is a blank slate that usually serves the movie.
I just saw it in Imax. Looks great...I think it's a pretty good remake.
think Jennifer Connelly got too skinny like she was in the Hulk.

Deserves to be remade? I say it deserves to be left alone. Only somethng done poorly should even be considered for a remake.

I read the Roger Ebert review today (I'm not even going to link it, it's not worth it). I hope I'm not spoiling it for anybody but, bottom line, we need to listen to Al Gore.
Maybe I'll catch parts of it on basic cable in a few years.

Wolverine: Origins is the only preview worth mentioning. Gambit looks pretty cool.
2012 is going to be awful (another disaster movie from Roland Emmerich), Fast and Furious got pushed to an earlier release date because supposedly it's going to be awful, and Taken looks great (these are previews that were beforehand)

Disappointing, the updated "you're destroying the earth" story was undeveloped and vague ...and i thought in 2008 we'd know better than to pull handguns on a fuckin spaceship!
.. doesn't even come close to the original!

Keep your expectations low and you will probably find the movie enjoyable. And it is only marginally similar to the original - it is tremendously difficult to compare the 2 and the original is a far better film. It's better to view the new version as a homage rather than a remake.
Don't read this if you are going to see the movie - definite spoilers:
The ending is horrible and leaves too many holes in the story. There is no "grand pronouncement to the world" and Klaatu never meets with any world leaders (political or scientific), so only a handful of people know the real reason for the "attack" and that the human race ends up narrowly avoiding destruction. Only Klaatu's change of heart allows humanity to have a shot. There was a lot of destruction, but only a handful of people know why. There is no logical impetus for the world to change and it would be tremendously easy to cover up the real reason in favor of some "invading alien" story. Other than the ending and lack of plot resolution, it was enjoyable.

saw it, hated it, wanted to scream at the end of the movie "THIS FILM BLEW" It was a constant build up to a horribly dissapointing ending. acting was bad, parts were confusing, and i now have renewed my hatred for Keanu Reaves.

Just saw this movie... it was pretty bad.
It jumped all over the place... and didn't really explain anything...
I haven't seen the original so I can't compare it.
By the way, we went into it with low expectations and still didn't like it.

Wow, I can't imagine a way that this movie could have been any worse, or any further from the original. I know things have to change when they get a rehashing after 57 years, but could they have stuck to anything in the original beyond the presence of the alien/human & the alien/robot?
The original was such classic that I fooled myself into thinking that with all the new technology a remake would give this compelling story a great upgrade. WRONG AGAIN! They get me every time like that.
As has been mentioned already, there was basically no story to follow...
The alien never talks to anyone of importance about why he's here. The "Earth Stood Still" scene isn't a show of the alien's superiority to make humans take note, it just kinds happens with no explanation. And in the end the only thing that saves the world is a change of heart by the alien...which he has by watching a step-mother & step-son bond. WTF? How does that tell him that the world can change? Is that really proof to a superior race that we humans will stop wars?! MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE!!
PS - poor coach Taylor (from Friday Night Lights)...that's two movies in a row where he dies in a flash.

See the original (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043456/). (OK, so it's one of my favorites. Sue me. Like a lot of the other folks who posted in this thread already, I saw this because of my dad. And I will watch it any time it's on TV.)
Michael Rennie is more attractive (not to mention a better actor) than Keanu any day of the week.

I just watched it.
I thought it was going to be crappy given it age.
Boy was I wrong. A great movie. Most of all I LOVED the music in it.
I don't know why but the "alien" or "creepy" music just got to me.
A great story as well.
and yes this is the one from 1951.
Whats your take on the movie. Since most of you grew up with it .

It was an OK movie. Not as bad as people say - but save your $10 bucks and wait for the DVD.
Spoliers ahead....

He met with the John Cleese character, there is your scientific. He also meets with the Secretary of Defense, who just blows him off, so he never has a chance to meet with anyone.
And the Earth stands still in order to save it. All technology that hurts the Earth is stopped in order for us to live. We're sent back to the stone age, but we live to evolve at the precipice. It's the only way. Not a hard concept to grasp, so I feel most of the harsh reviews are unwarranted.
I went and saw this anyway due to Benjamon Button being almost 3 hours!
