I just drove by that shop on Saturday because Church Street was closed ... I had NO idea it was there!!!!

Cool beans. (I don't need tix; I get in for free. Don't ask how.)

How long has your place been open, Diana? New Brunswick, even though it's a college town, seems to have a hard time maintaining comic stores. I know there was the one next to Terra Nova that shut down, and then the place on Hamilton Street (I think) that was the combo coffee shop/bookstore that closed down...

We've been open since February 2008.
Spread the word to anyone you know in the area..support your local comic book shop!
Pictures are always good right?

Wow. I was just at Maketa's last Friday and had no idea that store was there. Will need to stop in next time I am down there.

You advertising around the campuses? Busch kids would love it.

one_bad_apple

We flyer around campus whenever possible. We put an ad in the Home News and didn't really think it did a while hell of a lot. Right now, we're starting to run ads on 90.3 The Core. The thing thats ucks is the advertising rates for The Targum (the rutgers paper) are insane!!!!

Maybe in a.....ummm....more robust economy...we'd be able to throw around more ad money, but right now, we have to be pretty choosy.

Our most powerful advertising so far has been word of mouth among our rabid customer base..and sadly..you can't buy that.

I know the guy who owned one of those shops. Selling comics is a tough gig.

If I'm back visiting the old school soon I'll definitely stop in.

Nice looking comic book store! If I'm in your area, I'll definitely stop by.

I'll be at the NYCC all three days selling issues of Headlocked (booth 1201) On Friday 2/6, we are hoping to get Jerry "The King" Lawler to come sign issues of the book he did the cover for!

I'll update once this is 100% confirmed.

Targum's rates are high partly because they run your ad all week and partly because it's run almost entirely on advertising ... and it's a "free" paper.

Also, the referendum is probably right around the corner and students may be of a mind to vote against the $8 or $10 per semester fee that keeps it "free."

Is The Medium still around? (That used to be the Livingston weekly paper; it may have gone the way of the dodo.) You may get better rates with a "smaller" paper.

Also, check in with the Comparative Literature department to see if any of their grad-assistants are doing narrative forms theses. I took a class with a Grad Assistant doing a Doctoral thesis on narrative forms ... and many of her required texts were graphic novels and manga, which was really cool.

Lastly, if you're interested in a relationship with the alumni, PLEASE PM me. I know people who'd be interested in cultivating a relationship of this sort, including an event committee who will be running a "family day" event next month.

I'm a current undergrad at Rutgers and yeah, I think this year they announced the Targum fee thats added to your tuition is going away, I can't remember the details. Plus, even thought I'm a student I couldn't get a discount and the rates were REALLY high, like a week was almost 300 - 400 I think. Of course it's less if you commit to several weeks but not that much less, especially if it works out to several thousand dollars.

Is The Medium still around? (That used to be the Livingston weekly paper; it may have gone the way of the dodo.) You may get better rates with a "smaller" paper.I LOVE the MEDIUM but it's not all that reliable, maybe there were some changes in the staff this year. But, yeah I contacted them, got rates, also kinda high for a teeny tiny paper.

Also, check in with the Comparative Literature department to see if any of their grad-assistants are doing narrative forms theses. Got that email this morning.

I ordered a weekend pass. I'll definitely be there Saturday, debating taking my 6 year old nephew to free children day Sunday.

Is NYCC doing anything good for kids on Sunday or is it more of the same walking around and whatnot?

No, the referendum is how they stay funded; that may be changing with the way President McCormick is revamping the University. When I was there, if you voted "no" in the referendum, the Targum would become a pay-for paper. Or, at least that's the way I understood it. (I always voted "yes" because I didn't know what else I was going to do in the back of a lecture hall when I got bored waiting for class to start.)

Student discounts generally stink. And alumni haven't been offered discounts in years. Which hurts.

I LOVE the MEDIUM but it's not all that reliable, maybe there were some changes in the staff this year. But, yeah I contacted them, got rates, also kinda high for a teeny tiny paper.

"Reliable" meaning what? It's run entirely on advertising, so publication can be spotty.

And it's always been spotty. "Weekly" is a loose term. It would always depend on who was running the ship that semester.

Kevin Ferguson is teaching an undergrad class in the spring. Contacted him, thanks for the idea!

Not a problem.

When I was a student, I sought classes with offbeat themes, so I really had a great experience with a wide range of topics, departments and other things.

Of course I am! send me info at sales at falloutsheltercomics dottt com

Fabulous. I think it'll probably be too late for the event I was thinking about, but I will definitely get in touch. =)

It just frustrates me that it got moved back to the cold weather months. 2 years ago it was so goddamn cold out and they over sold the event by 20,000. LOTS of people just standing outside in the snow. Last year was fun, and it was a good vibe all around. I hope to see any and all of you this year. Last year only a few people from the board came to my stores (Jim Hanley's Universe)spot. I'll be there all weekend. I'll be the big scary bald guy. :)

On Friday, I'll have Jerry "The King" Lawler with me as he'll be signing copies of the cover he painted for Headlocked: The Tryout #1.

Decent show, it's gotten huge in 4 years (5th largest event in Manhattan I've been told).

Big thanks to Dennis Calero for drawing a Superman for my nephew and to Hosp for replacing my nephew's lost pin. He is six and I think his mind was blown with how cool everything was.

So did anyone pick up some cool shit this weekend at the con?

I picked up:
Scott Pilgrim 5 (and met Brian Lee Pilgrim)
Blue Monday 1-3
the latest Courtney Crumrin

So a very Oni weekend for me.

Big thanks to Dennis Calero for drawing a Superman for my nephew and to Hosp for replacing my nephew's lost pin.

No worries, I know I had the pin somewhere at home from last year and I know the simple things can make a kid's day. And they ended up putting out more Green lantern pins and I grabbed a few extra.

I bought a limited edition pin up print from Susan Heidi (www.susanheidi.com) and had it signed by her.

I met Tom Wilson, the artist of Ziggy, got a copy of his autobiography which he signed and did a quick Ziggy sketch for me.

I competed in a contest with the game X blades and won a limited edition (of 300) statuette of the main character by coming in with the 17th quickest time.

I visited Mike again, bought the 3 issues of his comic I didn't have and had the one signed by Jerry Lawler who was incredibly cool.

He was incredibly cool." /></a>

I also met Amber Benson (Tara from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and got a copy of her book signed.

Convention was awesome! Got to see Hosp again and I talked to Big Kev for a minute but I was bummed I missed Fez.

On to the show....

Lawler arrived early on Friday so we could walk around the show and check out the sights before it was open to the public. We checked out a lot of the exhibits and artist alley before heading over to meet some people that Lawler knew over at the DC Booth. Time apparently flew by because it was show time before you knew it....

Lawler sat down at one and was instantly mobbed. He brought along some artwork that he had done of Superman and Batman to complement his array of photos. He also had some quick sketches that he had done of Edge and Jeff Hardy at his hotel room the night before...

We were pretty much balls to the wall for the next 6 hours. Lawler was a champ signing, sketching, and posing for pictures. He only took a brief 5 minute break to wolf down a hot dog and soda before resuming the signing.

We of course also sold some comic books in that time and Lawler did stop for interviews with WWE.COM and ESPN radio as well as a few internet shows. In every interview, he always mentioned the book and me by name...only confirming that he is indeed the coolest man alive.

After the show we hit up Rosie O'Grady's for dinner and Lawler regaled us with some funny road stories and we talked about comic cons and the business. It was an incredible time!

Saturday and Sunday were also awesome. I got to meet a lot of cool wrestlers who were all very supportive of my book....but none moreso than Christopher Daniels. He is a big comic book fan and when I introduced myself to him...not only did he know who I was but he was very excited to finally get a chance to read Headlocked! Talk about a mark-out moment!

We did well on Saturday but we were also blocked a lot by the massive crowd to see Scott Steiner. On Sunday we absolutely killed. I wasn't expecting much because it was Kid's Day but we really moved a lot of merch. Just an awesome awesome experience.

I also made some very strong networking connections and there were some potential offers talked about which sound very promising. I'm always cautious about getting my hopes up with stuff like this but I'm very excited about some of the stuff that we talked about!

On Sunday night, I had dinner with former WCW wrestler/valet and fitness model Midajah and the promoter of Turnbuckle Promotions Jason Blaustein at perhaps the greatest Italian restaurant I've ever eaten at. (Mother Kelly's on Long Island) It was unreal. And for how she looks, Midajah can really power down some food. Most of the other wrestlers at our booth had eaten there on friday and Saturday and they couldn't stop talking about how good it was so I had to give it a shot. The place certainly lived up to the hype and then some....

All in all a fantastic weekend! I've been very down lately about the economy and the state of the comic book industry so it was really awesome to come away with a positive and hopeful weekend!

Next stop Megacon in Orlando from Feb 27th-March 1st!

Damnit, I had no clue Amber Benson was there.

And Mike, I looked for ya, but couldn't find ya. I tried to go out of my way to see all the buddays. Big Kev, Grendel_Khan, Gwennypoo, Dennis Calero...

Damnit, I had no clue Amber Benson was there..

She was there on day 3, she had an early day panel that by the title you wouldn't have known she was involved, and then her signing and time there competed with the Joss Whedon stuff. I know her signing was 1:30 to 2:30, and there was a bit of a line, but it was worth it.

I wanted to stop by and chat with some of the wrestlers at your booth, but I was so broke and didn't want to monopolize their time. I kept passing by to get a peak at what was going on though.
