i just started reading this excellent book called "our band could be your life - scenes from the american indie underground 1981-1991". it's basically a chronicle of some of the seminal indie rock bands in the 80's. it has reasonably in depth looks at black flag, minutemen, mission of burma, minor threat, husker du, replacements, sonic youth, butthole surfers, big black, dinosaur jr., fugazi, mudhoney, and beat happening.
even though i haven't gotten too far into it yet, this book is really well written and super interesting if you're into this stuff. take my recommendation

the moon it leaves silver but never sleep
and then the silver turns to grey
oh, stay with me, arienette, until the wolves are away
