Hello Dr. Steve,
I have a question as to just how large of a risk I may be for Diabetes. I am 6'2" and weight 320 pounds and am 20 years old I played football up until this year and still to this day have always been fairly active as well as eating mostly healthy. I recently found out though that my father's brother and my grandfather were diagnosed while in their 50's with diabetes. Finding this out has really motivated me to finally try and shed a lot of the fat I have, so my second question is can you recommend any good fat burners like Lipo 6X or Hydroxycut?

Thank you

Seigs:

Well, one way we judge a person's weight is by the "body weight index"(BMI);

BMI Categories:

Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
Overweight = 25-29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

Your BMI is 41.1...this alone increases your risk for diabetes, and the family history doesn't help matters (you may be genetically predisposed). Right now you're at risk for pre-diabetes according to the calculator you can find here: http://www.diabetes.org/risk-test.jsp .

I am a big fan of the Sugarbusters lifestyle...there's a thread on here about it somewhere. You can buy sugarbusters foods (after you read the book, which you can buy here: http://www.amazon.com/New-Sugar-Busters-Leighton-Steward/dp/0345469585/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229362434&sr=1-1) from http://www.cajungrocer.com.

I HATE hydroxycut and its ilk. Alli' has some positive things to be said for it (it's the OTC version of "Xenical", a fat blocker) but I wouldn't even take it without talking to your doctor first.

Good luck with it, man, and keep us informed as to your progress.

your friend,

Steve
