Springsteen, second show at Giants Stadium, July 2004. It was Liz's first concert, we had great seats, and the weather was freaking GORGEOUS. 75 degrees, no humidity.

I saw the Dead (not grateful ) two nights in a row back in 03 I think, or it may have been 04. One show at SPAC (beautiful venue in Saratoga, NY) and Hartford Connecticut at the Dodge Center.

The Hartford show was great. Unlike SPAC you could drink on the lawn. Overall great shows and a great time.

57 Phish shows all tied for #1.
There were definitely some real gems there, but the NYE 1999 in Florida was an amazing experience all around.

I've seen a bunch of shows at the Ryman Auditorium recently (since I moved to Nashville). That's the type of place where the acoustics and ambiance are perfect and make any show great. Wilco, Iron & Wine are my recent fav's.

My first concert definitely when i was 15 in 1998. Monster Magnet headlining, Kid Rock, and Hed Pe for the opener. Space lord mother mother!

Oh yeah it was at the Rave, in the small part in Milwaukee. My favorite place to see a band.

Acid Bath, Rollins Band, Nick Cave, Morphine (even though I got drunk with SF homeless before and passed out across the door at the Great American Music Hall), Rammstein/Soulfly, Painkiller (Zorn, Laswell, Harris), Praxis (Laswell, Buckethead, Brain (No Bootsy dammit)), NoMeansNo (fucking ruled). Someone mentioned HedPE. I saw them open the Strangeland tour the night after the guy from Snot died. Had never heard of them, but they blew the show out. The drummer had his kick drums mic'ed so perfectly that they sounded like an 808 hit and the whole Maritime Hall thrummed. At the end of the show, the singer was hanging out at the merch table being extremely cool to the fans.

The few times I've gotten to see The Dead Milkmen,

Brian Mcgee opening for the Orphans reunion last year- playing a mixed set of his new stuff and acoustic arrangements of Plow United songs, then playing a few Plow songs with the Orphans.

and then seeing Grey Area when they opened for The Bouncing Souls at the Troc a few years ago- since they arent an active band the drummer only knew the setlist, but the drummer for Kid Dynamite was in the crowd and hopped up to play 'Birthdays' for the encore.

Leo Kottke is playing a small theater about a block from my house in April, I feel like I should go just because I've heard a lot about him, and the venue is tiny.

I saw him two years in a row at a campus auditorium, and those two shows were amazing. A smaller venue would be great. He had an opener named Kelly Joe Phelps who was pretty good too.

Most of what I'd call my best concert "experiences" have been achieved at JazzFest the last 8 years. But, thats almost cheating b/c of the sheer length, number of bands, variety of genres, and quality of the musicians at those shows.

This past May on Monday between JazzFest weekends, we attended a chairty concert at Tipitina's, 7pm-2am or so. Probably the best single show I've ever seen. The lineup was this:
Little Feat, Galactic, The Radiators, The Rebirth Brass Band, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Trombone Shorty, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Wolfman Washington, Donald Harrison, George Porter Jr., Johnny Vidacovich, Eric Lindell, and a few others, plus a slew of brass bands playing outside on the street. A simply mind-bogglingly quality New Orleans funk and blues show.

Also, Billy Joel- NYE, 1989. Soft spot b/c it was my first concert. Plus it was a great 3 hour show, and we did the whole Auld Lang Syne thing at midnight.

Metallica- Woodstock, 1999. Only time seeing them, and it was a great show. Particularly memorable b/c it started to pour rain right before Enter Sandman and a lot of the crowd scrambled. Then right as the song got going, the lightning and thunder kicked in and the rain really came down. Seriously, couldn't have planned better pyro. Then, after the song ended, the lightning ended and the rain slowed to a trickle. Bizarre and awesome.

i think everyone needs to see a great ska band in a small venue at least once in their lives.

My first time seeing Prince, Musicology Tour at the Meadowlands. 2nd row thanks to my friends membership in the NPG Music Club. It was like a religious experience...and I'm not even a religious person. When the lights went down and he started the "Let's Go Crazy" Intro, I shivered.

Woodstock 94, hands down. I was 15 and had no idea who Joe Cocker was, and he blew me away.

This was the first new Woodstock they did, not the "burn things down" Woodstock, the "Hey a hippie is giving me homemade beer out of a groud" Woodstock.

One show I went to that I didn't mention was at St. John Divine Cathedral in NY in fall of '88.
It was a benefit for the Seva charity. Lots of different people and musicians participated. Laurie Anderson, Mickey Hart w/ a percussion ensemble, Crosby and Nash, Ram Dass (Richard Alpert) and the Guyoto Monks (Buddhist) are all I can remember off the top of my head. The acoustics in that place are incredible! There were about twenty Guyoto Monks and they have a vocal technique where they each can project two pitches at the same time. When they were on it was like a sea of sound coming at you.

Cocker's awesome. I hope to see him in New Orleans in April.

The '99 Woodstock gets a bad rap. It was a great weekend of music, plus everyone was really friendly and sharing. We had a great time. The fire stuff started at the end of the RHCP set, which was the last show on Sunday night. Most people had left by then. My group left right after the Chili Peppers when there was just a little midfield bonfire people were dancing around. We didn't even know what had happened until we got back home 7 hours later.
