And I can't, for the life of me, figure out what to get her.

My daughter was born on Feb 7 of this year. She is our first and this is her first Christmas. She is probably going to get a bunch of toys and clothes and other junk from family and friends. Multi-colored plastic things that will eventually end up in my basement waiting for the next child. Clothes that will be quickly outgrown and end up in multi-colored plastic totes waiting for the next child, who with my luck, will be a boy.

I do not want Daddy's First Christmas Gift to be anything like this. I want it to be something that she can use or enjoy throughout her childhood, even into adulthood. I don't want to get her trinkets, like jewelry boxes or CHristmas ornaments. I'd like it to be substantial and meaningful.

What is a man to do?

My son was born Feb. 20... that's nice you want to get her something memorable.

I've been thinking - honestly - he's not even going to be aware of the gift so whatever will be fine.

I'm thinking of going puppy.

Don't know why.

get her TIME with you.

Find a toy you can entertain her with, for example I really do love the idea of the puppets and that Dave plays them for Julianna.
Gives you a chance to be absolutely silly and make her laugh and giggle... they are toys they will love for years to come and some day she may put on the puppet show for you...

Also music, play music with her... look into children's music from classic to what you like... and sing and dance with her.

Great suggestions here. Katja has it on point I think with the "Time". Whatever I end up getting her it will be something we can enjoy together.

We already have too many animals. Two cats are keeping me from getting another dog. She loves our boxer, and he loves her. So, no puppy.

I rather enjoy the puppet idea. She's really receptive to silly stuff like that, and I think she might have a great time with them. Keeps us both creative too. I'm going to look around for them online.

Thanks again!

Buy the family pass to your local zoo or childrens museum. You'll spend the same amount on a toy that she'll outgrow and never remember, but you'll start a family trip. My oldest loves NYC and we alternate between the Museum of Nat. History and the Bronx Zoo.

pictures are great. i only have about four of me and my dad. i wish i had a lifetime more of them.

a possibility is to start a college fund for her. with the price of college education soaring every year, who knows what its going to be like in 2026. the more money in the bank early, the more will be in there at the end.

I realize she won't remember it, which is why I want something that will last. We're taking a family trip in February, so that's covered. I'm going to go with the puppet idea. They are relatively cheap, and she and I can have fun with them together for a long time.
