View Full Version : Driving In The Passing (Left) Lane

Why do you do it?!
There has to be people here that do it. If no one is in front of you or to the right of you, move over. Every day, I have a half hour commute to work and get stuck behind people who just don't want to move over and it drives me nuts. I never travel in the lane unless I'm passing someone. And if someone comes up behind me (haha), I get out of their way. Are people just lazy? Or do they think no one should go faster than they do?
I drive faster than everyone and I'm in a hurry. Please get out of my way. The longer I'm on the road, the less I'm on ronfez.net.

It's illegal to stay in the passing lane in VA, if you are holding up people behind you, but I've never seen anyone ever get a ticket for it.

Depends on where you are. Normally I'd agree with you. If I'm driving my eighteen wheeler through heavy traffic though and not stopping in that city, I'll normally keep left to allow cars to more easily merge, as they seem to have trouble otherwise. Perhaps they should learn the zipper technique. :) Ordinarily I hear ya.. So what are you doing in the left lane? Drive the speed limit, btw. It's the maximum you are allowed to drive and it is set for a reason.
:P

I think its illegal most places, as its illegal to obstruct the flow of traffic. I watched some car get pulled over because he wouldn't get out of the way of a state cop who wanted to pass him.
I've also noticed that whenever I'm behind a car in the left lane, if he doesn't have Mass plates, he has NJ plates. This was especially true when I drove across NY State on rt 90. Every car traveling in the left lane had NJ plates.

And the first question the cop asked him was, "Are you really that stupid?":wallbash:

On a 2 lane highway, this makes sense. Everything around here is 3 or 4 lanes. And truckers are never my problem in the left lane.
And I don't understand when people don't follow the zipper technique. Its the easiest thing to follow and helps reduce traffic.

Speeding.

I hate buttswipes that stay in this lane. I ALWAYS move over after I've passed someone.
I still remember an incident that happened about 12 years ago where some asshole in a Camaro would not get out of the passing lane so I was trying to pass him on the right and he kept speeding up just enough to keep me at bay. Talk about road rage. If I had had a gun I would have shot this dickhead. We challenged each other for about 20 miles. I'm surprised we both survived. But thinking of it to this day still makes my blood boil.

These people make even less sense.
They won't move over to let you pass but will speed up so you can't get in front of them.
My favorite thing is (if I'm not going to work) to get over to the right and make them miss their exit. I've actually come to a complete stop on a highway because I wouldn't let the car take the exit.
Also, I really don't get people who stay in the left rain while it is raining or snowing. It is the least safe lane to travel in, yet these people just keep driving there without a worry in the world.
I sometimes wonder if other people ever even check their rear view mirrors.

No, Rhode Island drivers are. But they all drive like 30 over the speed limit, so its ok.

On two lane highways and the parkway (mostly 2 lanes until you approach bridges) i always stay in the left and i drive maybe 2-3 miles above the speed limit (more on the parkway).
Technically it's the passing lane but that's not the way drivers here see it, especially the people who think that both lanes are the same speed.
It doesn't matter though because most individuals feel entitled to the road they drive on and so they act like dickwipes.
PS- Defense driving classes show you proof that even if you speed to wherever youre going you will only get there a mere minute or two earlier compared to your normal speed.

Staten Islanders driving on the Garden State Parkway. Steady at 58 mph and in the left lane. Always!

Why? Why not just move over and let the person behind you pass?

Yes, but driving fast is so much more fun than going the speed limit.

My only experience on the Garden State Parkway was 2 lanes of traffic going 85mph until about 3 feet before the toll booth, slamming on the breaks, and then speeding away.

Well, honestly it's sort of weird to explain.
Everyone who uses the left lane always drives faster than the right lane and it's not so as to pass, it's just the designated faster drivers lane.
Unless you're in a cul de sac or areas where there are single lane streets and stuff the only route to get through towns are highways but they shouldn't even count as such because they are going through a lot of developed areas (does that make sense?)
I live in Middletown, Nj- so if you've ever driven down Highways 35 and 36 you'll totally get what im saying.

I'm really only talking about actual 3 or 4 lane highways. Parkways, I would assume, are a different thing.

There is only a single 3-4 lane highway i can think of off of the top of my head and i don't drive anywhere near it because it scares me.

I generally use the left lane just to pass, but if I pass one car and then see up the road there is another car also going slower than me then I will stay in the left lane until I pass them also, unless there is a car behind me going faster, then I will pull into the right lane and let them pass.

Try driving in the left lane on the Autobahn. I did it once. Just once.
Oh, and on the Autobahn, cars merging onto the highway have the right of way so you have to let them in. Much more civilized!

Yes, and it's also more expensive to get a drivers' license because people actually treat it as a privilege rather than a right/right-of-passage.
(I was also going to make a snide comment about how they shoot you for driving poorly instead of issuing tickets, but I don't think they really do that.)
