I suppose it's a classic case of different strokes for different folks, but have you ever had a friend who is insanely passionate about a hobby that doesn't move you in the least? They have an almost fanatical devotion to it, whether it's a sport, a genre of music, or a pasttime. They are so enthralled with it they've tried time and time again to get you on board, but it just doesn't do anything for you.
Of course the opposite is also true. You might have tried getting your buddy to dig what you're into, and he or she couldn't be bothered.
I can think of dozens of examples, but off the top of my head I'll offer these: basketball and the Ron and Fez show.
My buddy and I have been best friends for over 30 years. We're closer than brothers and I don't think we've ever had an argument in our lives. Yet he loves the game of basketball - college, pro, women's, etc. If he's flipping around and finds a game he's glued to the set. I can't stand the game and think it's the most boring sport ever to watch. I think I'd watch any other athletic event before basketball. If I'm over his house I'll beg him to change the channel.
Conversely, I've tried my damnedest to get him into Ron and Fez since the WNEW days and he thinks I'm nuts. He doesn't find them funny at all. His new car came with XM and he claims he's given them a listen a few times to see if his opinion has changed, but it hasn't.
What about you guys?

Anime. I got a close buddy who always tries to get me into anime, but it sucks and I'm just not into it. Conversely I try to get him into women...

sometimes your closest buds just dont relate to the same thing. all my friends think im completely nuts for loving ron and fez and this board.
they have listened and they just dont get it.
as for your friend loving womens basketball, you should just tell him to listen to Oprah & Friends.

I am sure Ron and Fez will apply to most people ... it definitely does for me. A lot of my friends outside of the Firehouse don't understand why somone would run in to burning buildings for free. And most people I am friends with could give a rats ass about grass-fed meat, sustainable farming, local foods.

different strokes for different folks....ugh
If we all liked the same things life would be filled with dullness. In fact, maybe the reasons why you guys are so close is because you have different points of interest that somehow mend together and fill the different voids in your characters. Not that that's some new out look on this subject but like Paula Abdul so ingeniously stated "I take 2 steps forward, you take 2 steps back. We come together cause opposites attract."

My old roomate played guitar like me. We would get drunk and play for hours and liven up the partys. But, he was totally consumed by the obscure bands scene and all of the wierdest songs you had ever heard. Over time, when we would try to play together he would start playing shit from bands that i never new existed and it would shut down the playing fun. He tried to get me into some of this music but I couldnt stand it - never found anything i liked. So it ended up that when groups of people wanted us to play - i would only play because he did want to accomodate the commercialized tastes of our friends. BTW... we lived in Tennessee - not such a great underground music scene here.

Look at the thread title ... I have friends who understand why I am a volunteer fireman, it's just not for them ... but I also have friends who just don't understand at all how someone could do it ... and that is a little strange. Although we're close enough to be good friends, they can't even fathom the idea of giving up your free time to help your community ... that seems a little strange. I dont' think GVAC was suggesting that a group of friends have identical interests.

My husband builds balsa wood model airplanes. He LOVES it. I can be a couch potato but he loves to keep busy so he works on them for hours sometimes. I will occasionaly go out and watch him fly them but it just doesn't float my boat. But he's happy so I'm happy.
None of my girlfriends like sports and I'm obsessed with them but we all get along great. They just don't get why I'm so into them.

I wasnt coming down on gvac in the least, if thats what you're trying to point out. I was simply stating the fact that maybe the differences of interest between friends can be the reason you both get along so well. Like in your situation, maybe one of the reasons your friends admire and love you so much is that you DO give your free time to the community, where they couldnt fathom doing such things, which in some way is fulfilling the void in there character and draws them to you.
its not a bad thing. Its a very good thing.

Re-reading that it sounds defensive ... didn't mean to come off that way. For some reason I thought we were all looking in a differnt direction.

blues in general. How the fuck can you be content to play the same progression hundreds of times in only two or maybe three keys?

SACRILEGE!
That's the challenge of blues music - to find something new in such a confined medium.
