don't just jump into the snow shoveling, do the proper stretches first or you could pull a muscle.

its also important to use the right equipment for your winter workout. I prefer the good old fashion steel shovel over the light weight plastic ones . The steel shovel will help build up muscle density quicker.

I don't "shovel" as much as i go to the top of the driveway and force my weight forward with the shovel.
It's kinda fun.

I yell at the snow, and it blows itself away. I'm that great.

perhaps you are using the wrong posture during your workout. I suggest you lift with the knees and leg muscles. This will take the strain off your back. Be like a steam shovel, bend down with knees bent, pick up a shovel full, rise with your legs and swivel to the side and release the snow. Practice in front of a mirror till the exercise is perfected.Good Luck!

We had snow...then sleet...then rain.
I was afraid it would freeze (as I didn't know it would switch over to rain at night) so I bought two pusher-style shovels (we don't really have a need for lifter style ones) and scraped the snow off the driveway, path and sidewalk. Took me 20 minutes ... and I really should've changed my shoes before I started!
The next time it snows, I'll be all set for shoveling.

I have an upward sloping driveway. We got about 18 inches of snow over about 2 days. The biggest problem was the ice underneath the snow. I enlisted a friend who was over; at this point the snow shovel was useless with the ice. So my friend, broke out a military spade and attacked the ice while I shoveled it away. That worked great. Then I added a little Ice Melt. Then I had to take a break and smoke a cigarette.

I usually go to my parents house after it snows to dig them out (you know, to get twice the work out), but I had I to go to my office in the morning. I called my brother, to see if he could shovel Mom and Dad out, he said he would head right over with his two sons.
On my way home I stop by Mom and Dads, my brother and his kids are still there; the walk and steps are NOT shoveled. I go into the house my Mom is making them lunch, the kids made a mess of the house, and my brother is sitting on his ass bullshitting.
Guess who did the shoveling.

My house has a 4 car wide driveway on the road with a one car wide driveway that goes down a hill toward the house, 4 doors that need to be cleaned, a garage to clean around and our neighbors let my grandma park on their driveway so she doesn't have to climb the hill, so I clean over to that as well.
I'd fucking die or take 6 hours to clean it all with a shovel.

I was thinking of getting a smaller one, so I can throw it the back of my car and take it to my parents. Whenever it snows I have to dig my car out fast so I can get over to my parent's house before my Dad makes an attemp at shoveling.

picking up the snowblower and placing it into a cars trunk sounds like a fine way to build upper body strength. Try to hold the machine for a period of time with your arms out stretched before you place it into the trunk and when you remove it. Increase the distance from where you pick up the machine and release it so as to work the leg muscles. Drink plenty of liquids.

Snow shovelling is good exercise, but damn, it's really fucking deadly. Sneaks up on people and knocks out the ol' ticker a lot each year. Seems like I'll see notice of even teenagers or young adults keeling over from shovelling a ton of snow each winter.

perhaps the people who get injured while shoveling did not work up to it by raking leaves first in the autumn. A good warm up to the main workout is important.

You guys need to get some kids or minorities in your neighborhhod. $20 gets my driveway and entire side walk shoveled and salted while I lay on my couch relaxing and warm.

Every winter I wonder why I haven't bought a snowblower.
Here in Westchester we got a break so I shoveled my driveway and the old bitty's
who lives across the street.
I Drove to the shop to shovel the garages and the sidewalk and tend to the shop cats.
There were 3 beers in the fridge and I'm just finishing the last.
If I remember correctly numbness and pain in the left arm is a heart attack, but the right
arm means I'm just out of shape ?

I think you're right with the left arm being the bad one.
Summer is the best time to buy a snowblower. I got mine half price on craigslist in July. Still had the tags on it.
