It's a German tradition, I am sure Katja will tell us all about it.

Ooo.. I have that pickle buried in my tree.
Grandparents who were first gen American from German parents used to do it so we have kept the tradition.

I never heard of this tradition, but my mom makes homemade pickels and gives them out at Christmas.

yes, I will tell you that it is not a German tradition... because everybody I have asked from different regions in Germany had no clue about it.
The first time I heard about it was when I moved here.
I like the idea of it though... and I have a German friend who has made it a tradition after her inlaws gave her one for their first tree here.
personally I don't have one.
oh and for back up of my comment

My family has been hiding the pickle in the tree for about 15 years now. I always used to be good at finding it, on Christmas morning, I spend some time examining the tree, looking near the trunk, because that's where the pickle is usually hidden. I now live with my love, and last year, my parents gave us a pickle to hide in our tree. Now we get to hide the pickle on our own.

My wife is part german so we have had that as a tradition. The kid that finds it gets an extra gift. My daughter always finds it
