Anyone else outraged about this continuing "everybody wins" attitude...no more 'F's...Little League baseball that doesn't keep score...everybody gets a trophy. We're raising a generation of babies who won't realize the notion of failure until they get into the workforce and gets fired after one day. This overly PC world sickens me! :furious: [/rant]

Friend of mine is a teacher and she isn't allowed to use a red pen for grading, it promotes negativity. Also, if something is wrong, she has to circle it, no crossing out with an X. There are a few other things she can't do anymore but I can't remember.

Fuck that shit. I am a teacher and planning to go into policy making when done with my PhD.
There is no way you can take away a failing grade. There is no reason to "let everyone get another chance to learn."
The idea that anyone can learn anything is bullshit. We are too much of protected babies in this country to admit it though. Not everybody grows up to be a scientist or a doctor. Until the field of education is comfortable with telling children and adolescents (age appropriate) that there are things they will not be able to do, we will have hair brained ideas like not giving Fs.
Sorry to those out there who can't get the grade (not to make a pun) but there is already a great support system existing for students to be advised into things they can do with success. We do need people to work at every level not just the highest of each field.

I agree. I'm wondering what the final grade is when they repeat the assignment, however. If you're giving the kid that got an F a chance to redo the assignment, and he gets a B the second time, it's not really fair to the kid who got the B-.
I don't think it's coddling, it's just trying to get them all to learn the material.
If it was graded as an "N" for "Nice try" it would be a different story.

It's easy to just fail them. If it didn't get through to them the first time, what makes you think repeating the class will work?
The kids that don't give a shit won't take advantage of the second chance, so it won't benefit them. People learn differently and at different speeds than others. I don't see a problem with it.

but im trained to teach history to kids who can read....just like everyone else that has a degree in history with a license to teach 6-12...they should be stuck in classes with teachers who are trained to teach reading....not just pushed through bc no child is left behind....we need to have better standards if we want higher learning....when we lessen our standards...we have graduates coming out with a 3rd grade reading level...unacceptable...which is why college is the new high school and masters is the new college degree....not failing kids is what is causing the weakening of the education system by having now honors kids are just kids who can behave and regular are just kids who got bumped through
and P.S. its NOT easy to fail a child....one because u love them, two because there is way more paper work, three you get in trouble, four once they do your numbers if u have failing students ur department wont get as much money as they did the last year so we HAVE to push them through essentially to keep getting money for new books and field trips etc

Well, at some point we're just arguing semantics, because I don't think that kids who can't read should be socially promoted. If you want to call it a "fail" before making the kids redo the work - or the grade - before they're moved on, I guess that's fine with me.
We're on the same side here.

those make sense though and have nothing to do with coddling them.
It's been proven that red marks are received more aggressively... changing the color is not a big issue.
As for the circling, I would agree with that, circle or underline, crossing it out makes it harder to read and actually see what your mistake was... once it's crossed out you are also less likely to even look at it again.
Actually, I think this is good. Why not give students, parents and teachers another chance to get the material learned?
Failing a grade gives them the same opportunity to re-learn the material.
It's pretty sad that there are kids pushed through who cannot even read read just to keep school funding and graduation rates at a certain percentage for a school so they fit into a norm and can operate.

You're a teacher and you want to go into policy, and you think the problem with our educational system is that we don't spend enough time telling kids what they can't do.
Please. Stay away from my kids.
(more: I think the reason most kids fail in school is because their parents suck, and nobody has the balls to look the parents in the eye and tell them that.)

What's next?
More days allowed off? Class start time bumped up to 9:30AM and end at 1:30PM? More Gymtime? No more summer school burden? Other things I can't think or.
The F or anything under a 65 was considered a failure. When I received an F or a failure, I would be like "Wow, what a dumb fuck and lazy asshole I am. I'm gonna regret this." And I did. Seems like there is hardly anything to worry about nowadays. It seems like less and less discipline is being taught in a lot of schools, and that everybody is a winner mentality is sickening. Has "you've had a rough time guy. Think of this as a learning experience" replaced "You stupid lazy asshole."
Where does the blame lie?
We are slowly moving towards:

while they're drastically changing the curicculum i've got a bone to pick-
can we get rid of all the lazy, useless teachers that base an entire term around two tests?
why bother with ANY smaller assignments along the way to show what's actually being absorbed by the students, just leave it all up to these massively long scantrons that promote memorization rather than learning. oh and this way they dont even have to put thought into the grades, just feed the papers into the machine and let it do all the work. great teaching asshole. and these fuckers are EVERYWHERE-we've all had at least one of these. do your goddamn job better.
so glad im done with school, feel sorry for my bro who's verging on not graduating because of an asshole described above.

Rit: you keep saying that we should give these kids a second chance to learn material. What do you think repeating a grade is? Its the second chance to learn material! Its not like if the kid fails they can't come back to school. They stay in the grade with the teachers that are trained to teach the material that they need to learn.
If the word FAIL is what you have a problem with then that's just silly. Kids need to learn that sometimes they are not going to succeed at certain things. I'm not saying that means they CAN'T succeed, but that they need to work harder to achieve their goals. If a child goes through their childhood thinking no matter what they do or how they act they will always succeed, then when they do fail in life (which they will, at something) they won't have the mental knowledge and experience to deal with that failure and grow from it.
If a lawyer loses a case in court, its not like they can tell the judge "oh well my parent fighting and I have all these brothers and sisters and...blah blah blah, can we do the trial over?".

My mother went to Catholic school but missed nearly two years due to illness. Somehow she slipped through the cracks and didn't learn to read till the 5th grade, which is amazing on so many levels. She taught herself to read but I know she's an exception.

I blame the kids themselves for failing. They didn't put forth the effort themselves to learn when they had the chance, they act like shits in class, they by all rights should get F's and if they have any sense of self-worth they will say "oh shit I got an F let's stop partying and study next time because we care so much about our education that we are going to not let this happen again!!" Problem is myriad for why kids are A) unmotivated B) lazy C) pussified D) accepting of their own inadequacies and the list goes fucking on.
Parental blame really fucking is over-rated in this culture of pussylipped cunt suckers like the people who say "THE PARENTS IZ THE FULL RESPONSIBLAMEITY!!?$"- stop acting so fucking superior to the world like you know who the real culprits are. You're just spewing generalities like they were statistical facts when you have no fucking clue what goes on in even 1 other household besides the one you're in. For one thing, blaming the parents really is a case-by-case basis. One of my best friends in elementary school (he happened to be black) went through school not trying- he had no faith in himself or in the school system. He stole, he got into fights, fucked other people's girlfriends, and he dropped out of school in 10th grade and moved to Paterson where people allege he joined some gang. His mother neglected him because she was busy using H, and abandoned him for crack while he was in 7th grade. The foster family that took him in made him drink from the hose. That is a case where the parents are to blame.
Now unless everyone's parents abandons them for crack and makes 'em drink from a garden hose every day, I don't think most kids have it so bad that their parents should be strung up and shot for the failures of their kids. I could blame my parents all I want with the psychobabble that's been made available, (and yes they cause plenty of emotional damage) but that would just be me shifting responsibility from myself which is one of the weakest ways to go through life.

It does seem to be easy to just say "the parents are at fault". But let me tell you my friend FROM EXPERIENCE, that in many, many of the cases the parents dont put forth the effort like they did in the past. I taught Special Ed for 5 years, and saw quite a few cases where the kids were just fucking lazy. They did not display the "symptoms" of ADD, or ADHD, yet there parents were rich enough to hire their own pshycologists to classify them as such. And what does the school district do, they take the diagnosis. Even when the school pshycologist says they are no where near the diagnosis. Fact of the matter is they are lazy fucking cunts, and they raised a lazy cunt who is a burden to the state. Hearing stories like this is the reason why I dont go back to teaching...
School is probably responsible for 40% of a person's education, 30% from the home. Who first taught almost ALL of us how to read?? Our parents. They took the time to sit with us and go over things, hell even clarify facts or even make sure we were pronouncing things properly. I know it was my parents that taught me to write cursive BEFORE I went to elementary school. Yes, I understand that people work two jobs now a days, BUT instead of spending 3 hours watching "world greatest crackwhores" or "Who wants to blow an elephant??" Why not spend that time going over stuff with their children?? And it doesnt have to be the kids homework, but anything. I know my parents were very active in taking me to museums and battlefields, as well as getting books about stuff that I was into. I will tell you right now that shit does not happen anymore.
I will never forget the case of a parent who worked PT, her husband was FT. She told us that she would spend time buying cigarettes for her 14 year old daughter. The girl could barely read. Yet when we brought up the idea that maybe they do some school work together, or even some stuff to help her reading or something creative, this fucking TWATS response was "Thats what the schools are for." I wish I had my Mossberg at that moment and a national law sent down from the President to stamp out stupidity. I would have of shot the fucking cunt where she stood.
The people in this world DONT CARE anymore. They want the schools to do EVERYTHING for their kids. Yet when it comes time to fail them cause the teacher Doesnt have time to spend with the slower kid. Lets scream rant and holler. When the parent has no communication with their child at home, and it is up to the school to teach sex ed. Lets scream, holler and rant. When the scientifically proven facts about the universe is explained in class as opposed to the voodoo mysticism of religious dogma is taught. Lets scream holler and rant. People want schools to do everything and nothing at once. And the teachers cant win. So yes, in many many cases it is the fault of parents why the kids are fucked up.
The other 30% is from self teaching. No you dont have to go teaching yourself how to speak a language, or how to play an instrument, nor discover a new form of energy. But it is the responsibility of the individual to do some independent reading. Maybe even follow up on a subject you disagreed with in school, and so forth. I know when I got bad grades, my nintendo was taken away, or I wasnt allowed to play baseball. There are no reprisals anymore...and yet the little dumb cocksuckers who cant read are "our future." Ill take a double dosing of double barrel shotfun for one please.

Actually, up until recently Brown was only Pass/Fail. They didn't have letter grades.
From what I've heard they've slowly been moving their classes to a GPA system b/c they were finding that graduates were having tougher times securing jobs without GPAs on their resumes.
And at Harvard, it's virtually impossible to fail. Their withdrawl policy allows students to withdraw from a class right up until the final. So if you know you're going to fail the class, you can just pull out without penalty.

I know your on the same page with me on some things...but just so i can say my junk- kids should have all the chances they need...and if repeat is a better word then run with with it, but they shouldnt be bumped up which is the essence of what these new rules makes teachers HAVE to do....in addition everyone goes through a divorce these days...teachers are prepared for the up and coming normal trends (divorce, abuse, single home, drug use, etc) and we have done our best to make sure these students have been looked after....
while they're drastically changing the curicculum i've got a bone to pick-
can we get rid of all the lazy, useless teachers that base an entire term around two tests?
why bother with ANY smaller assignments along the way to show what's actually being absorbed by the students, just leave it all up to these massively long scantrons that promote memorization rather than learning. oh and this way they dont even have to put thought into the grades, just feed the papers into the machine and let it do all the work. great teaching asshole. and these fuckers are EVERYWHERE-we've all had at least one of these. do your goddamn job better.
so glad im done with school, feel sorry for my bro who's verging on not graduating because of an asshole described above.
while it appears it might be the lazy teacher in many situations, in my school system we are required to work in PLC's which means all the teachers teaching the same thing have to have meetings where they create almost exactly the same lesson plans and most certainly all of them have to use the SAME EXACT test....everything that the curriculum requires is not only given to u in a list of "Objectives" but everything you do has to be suggested or approved by not only the chair of your department but also the principal or vice principal that presides over your department. None of us want to do this....you can complain your face off about it to anyone and they will tell you the scan trons are the only way to get massive amounts of statistics so detailed such as percentages of which questions were missed by which students etc...doing this by hand would take hours when you have 200 tests in front of you...if we could give our own stuff out we could clearly get a better idea of how to teach more effectively but we ARENT ALLOWED
this system has been set up to try to help those who are having a hard time passing and and easy time failing....but somehow the failures still wanna fail when we are trying everything we can
Rit: you keep saying that we should give these kids a second chance to learn material.
If a lawyer loses a case in court, its not like they can tell the judge "oh well my parent fighting and I have all these brothers and sisters and...blah blah blah, can we do the trial over?".
delightful i creamed a little in happiness
You really need a new bit.
have i ever attacked you on a silly subjective level, probably never will,...... your apology is accepted
I keep seeing "Britney is a racist" and then read posts like the above from her alot, so whether or not it's a bit or she really is a racist, I agree with Aggie..
again, have i ever attacked you on a silly subjective level, probably never will, your apology is accepted
and P.S. im not a racist as much as i am extremely prejudice, in real life do i drop the N(censored for those of us who arent used to listenin to offensive talk radio) word often, yes i do, and im called a bitch or it, so we are even
call my fav hotline 252-492-7000 but dont call it if u dont have a sense of humor bc it is a triple K hotline...anytime i need a good laugh i do
I blame the kids themselves for failing.
I could blame my parents all I want with the psychobabble that's been made available, (and yes they cause plenty of emotional damage) but that would just be me shifting responsibility from myself which is one of the weakest ways to go through life.
brilliantly stated
There are no reprisals anymore...and yet the little dumb cocksuckers who cant read are "our future." Ill take a double dosing of double barrel shotfun for one please.
clearly everyone in this thread who has been a teacher or is one seems to say the same thing:clap:...which leads me to my next response....
No I don't Aggie. And you should know better.
I blame the liberal human cock sucking rights whites.
much better

laughed hard, laughin for days, i hope you meant this joke in all the beautiful ways it can be taken....if not than your welcome for my assist
So if you know you're going to fail the class, you can just pull out without penalty.
if by penalty u dont think losing grands is a penalty......all im sayin is i made money like that, id let them ass rape me and still pass them to the next grade

Punishment should be immediate and severe....
students wouldnt fail if they were going to get their balls cut off (before you post literal nancy ...we get it) ..most students arent slow, most are lazy and our system gives them the right to be lazy....and what i am reading in this thread by people with no experience actually teachin just experience as a student, i am coming to a conclusion that u are saying we should make it even more easy for students to become more lazy...when will this height of laziness be achieved...so we can all get A's and we can all be brain surgeons (bc we got really good using our hands playin WOW)
if you havent seen my myspace profile, at the bottom you will see my amazing and perfected graph of achievement...i had been formulating it for years, and every student that i have ever taught knows it by heart....
and P.S. you computer nerds should know the new lingo on the streets is "FAIL" for just about every teenager who exists today....next time i see a great kick in the balls pic, i will photoshop the word success over it so wasted loads will understand it

Ummm so this is a good thing for anyone 25 or older then right? Job opportunities?! YAAAAAY
