I am sure there are few people like me out here that have a feeling that bad times are ahead. Though I see no indication in my industry, I feel it is almost a matter of time before it gets effected by this recession and the company start t think of letting people go.
Does anyone else get the feeling of impending doom? How do you brush off the feeling and keep yourself positive?

Yes - usually late at night.

I listen to old R&F shows. It comforts me and helps me get back to sleep.
Lately "Wonderboy Gets Dumped" does the trick for me......

Over the last year, 95% of my primary job-functions have been offshored/outsourced to India and the Philippines. Right now, I could train my 14-year-old cousin (who has ADHD) to do my job.

We've had 10 positions eliminated, which translated into about eight people being laid off and "open" positions on several teams being eliminated.

Our office just consolidated from 3 leased floors in our building to one by eliminating our library, shifting some of my coworkers to another company-owned location and allowing a handful of folks to go home-based.

We just sat through two of the most butt-numbingly useless corporate bullshit meetings within the last 2 weeks talking about the changes to the way our company will be doing business.

At the last meeting, they announced that the "bonus pool" would be reduced for next year. After they'd spent an hour speaking about a half-billion dollar multi-year investment of company resources ... when you're talking about that much money and your coworkers are being HAMMERED by the economy, it's hard to look at a reduction of the bonus money realistically.

Morale is low. I started to fill out my self-evaluation for my annual review ... and had to stop because everything I typed was negative and angry.

However, I've put on a brave face and have been making a lot of jokes about the situation. And I've been looking into ways to get out of the industry because, the way I'm reading it, the type of work that I do will be completely gone within the next 5 years.

The other thing that helps is doing things I enjoy on the weekends and during my time at home. Lately, it's been baking cookies. Earlier in the fall, it was gardening. Later this winter, it'll be volunteer work while in the spring it'll be exercise - training for my 6th Avon Walk event.

We'll see what else I can find to keep my morale up ... I've been promised a second telecommuting day starting in the New Year.

You're a big boy; you can write your own frigging rant.

(I've been jumped on for answering for you too many times to fall into that trap.)

There continues to be a population explosion in this country and the jobs are drying up and corporations are outsourcing overseas. What the hell are we going to do? What will out children do? Somethings gotta give. Why do we as a people enable laws that allow this to happen and let the corporations just profit off us and then move away and leave us high and dry with no future?

I wouldn't exactly describe it as an "explosion" myself.

And it depends on the industry ... some sectors won't be outsourced or offshored any time soon.

We're starting to face those questions now with the automakers' bailout and other economic issues that will be a priority within the first 100 days of the new administration. It'll be interesting for a while, you know?

I think that people with a "feeling of impending doom" are trying to control a situation that is out of their control, by trying to "predict" that something bad is going to happen, maybe just to say "I KNEW IT!" In this case you can use that bad feeling to be productive about it and actually get the ball rolling towards protecting yourself, be it saving up extra money, looking for new work, reducing your monthly expenses, etc. No need to be a victim of these times, we just all have to work a little harder.

i have a few moments of dread, but they're fleeting

i work in retail, which is bad enough -- i work at the flagship store, and things are not good

to make things worse, i work in corporate gifts ... and almost every major company that's been in the news for all the wrong reasons, are our clients and they're really not too concerned about handing out holiday gifts

our EGC business was really strong in the last quarter, but that's probably a result of folks cashing in their miles and points for some spending money ... but since mid-november, things have come to a grinding halt

in the past, i'd work 60-70 hours a week from thanksgiving to christmas, and the overtime was great ... this year, there's just barely anything to do -- the good news, i have more time to spend with my wife amd 10 month old son ... and i might actually get to attend a holiday party, and enjoy the holiday season
