Is the Lock Release button on the shifter stuck in? Have you tried moving it to somewhere other than towards Park?

Yep. tried that. Will not move still.

Now the GF left the car at the bank and I will not be able to get to it until 2ct.

Have you tried depressing the brake pedal at the same time as shifting it? There should be a bypass next to the shifter, covered by this little nub or mini-cover. Have you tried that?

Yes. she tried it all.

I am going to go out and check the fuses and linkage(cable)

Um...so you have a baby that drives? And cannot drive now that the shifter is stuck? That's a bad thing?

As far as how the shifter works. It could be something electrical or mechanical. Most shifters have a little plastic nub on the bottom that pop into the gear hole that you select. By using the unlock button, it releases it. If it is stuck, it could first be that the unlock button is no longer working.

Sometimes the nub is electronically linked to the ignition, where it will not move if a key isn't present. You said you got a new ignition switch. Has she tried to slam the key really far into the ignition switch, just to make sure it is in there snug? Have her slam it with her palm.

And she tried the bypass? You need a screwdriver for it, and you have to press it down. if that didn't work it may be the actual mechanise or housing. That will cost ya a couple hundred to replace.

Depending on the model of your car, I would call the dealership that it was purchased from, and ask if there is anything you can do in the meantime to fix the issue. Speak to their Service Team. They may even offer to come out and look at it.

my truck won't shift if it thinks no one is in the seat. Have you tried bouncing on the seat? or kicking the tire and yelling at it?

Most cars that are newer only let the shifter move with the key in the start position, if you have a new ignition it may be misaligned, thats very easy to do in those cars.

The trany (not the Jim Norton type) either needs a new linkage or rebuilt. Also on Pontiacs (GM for that matter) there is a good little bit involved with the replacement. You will have to spend a few bucks to have it taken care of.

your to old to understand. the tint is only on the back windows like most vehicles come stock.

what do you drive?

its all fixxed. thanks to all that helped.

it was just that the cable was in an akward position from summer. then the extreme low temps plus that made it not want to budge.

Wow, was I wrong. Eh, I have seen the cables kinked and still try to shift but if it happened to you than it could happen elsewhere.
