First day of NJ shotgun hunting season today and first time I have ever been out in the woods trying to shoot anything.

Went out at 6am, first one on the ground by 7:20. Sat around for another hour and second one shot around 8:20.

Both hit in the lungs, dead by the time I found them.

Pretty damn good for a first time hunter.

Boom. Lung shot.

What kinda gun ya got?

I shot a shotgun for the first time in my life last year. 22 and 28 gauge shotgun down in North Carolina. I didn't kill anything but some clay discs.

Brown and black, not camo version. Also have a scope from Cabella's on it so I could hit stuff at least 75 yards away, but the ones today were almost next to me from the stand I was in.

Especially when those dead deer could have killed the people that hit them.

There was a great Sports Illustrated article recently about the decline of hunting and the problem it's causing people. It's on the long side but a good read:

What they don't go into is how the hunting and games commisions in states manage the deer populations in a manner to create overpopulations in some area and underpopulations in others to improve hunting during the season.

a side effect of this is massive deer migrations to underpopulated areas, usually by crossing high traffic areas.

If we stopped artificially blowing up the deer populations, we wouldnt have as many accidents.

Congrats...
Let's see how you do next week with the bucks. It's a different story.

I saw one this morning off behind some brush who was hanging out with the first one I shot, they both heard me when I was turning around to see if I could spot anything. Both jumped and froze. I saw the antlers but couldn't see the deer. I just sat there not moving waiting for them to make a move. One eventually started to come towards me and was almost directly below the tree stand. Slowly spun around and found him to my left with a perfect side shot. Pulled the gun up and nailed him in the lungs. He took one spin around a tree and ran about 40 yards and dropped. Left a perfect blood trail. Hopefully next Monday some antlers will come back around.

It was a pretty good rush, I doubt I'll ever have a day as perfect as today but I'll always be hoping. Would have been a whole different story if I sat out there for 5 hours and didn't see a thing, but it worked out well and now I am excited.

I live in the suburbs (but still indiana) and I was reading in a chair outside and a deer walked 5 feet from me in the ol yard a few weeks ago. If I can punch a deer there are to many of them. Im not a hunter but especially in some areas its neccesary. 7 years ago I found a salt lick in the near woods (where you cant legally hunt) and its been gone for about 5, but we still have deer, fox, coyote, eagles wildlife like a midwest zoo. As I said not rural just Indiana.

work, not sport. If you are in the wild, and have to kill things to live, thats fine. If you eat hamburgers you're just eating.

saying that going out and hunting and eating something yourself is less manlier than letting a machine kill cows in a line and then relating it to buttsex

yeah

the difference is that one kills to live, the other kills to have a good time.

What's wrong with going out in the woods to hang out with nature for a few hours while having a good time, taking out a few deer in the process, and then getting all the meat off of them to eat for yourself? My fridge and freezer are going to be stocked for a nice while due to the fun that I had this morning.

How is that worse than getting in my car, listening to Ron and Fez and having a good time, going to the store, spending my money on something killed in a production line by people who don't give a crap about their jobs that has been force fed and constrained to non-natural pens and cages, and then coming home and eating it?

It's not like I am shooting them and then leaving them out in the woods. You shoot them, you find them, you take them to a butcher, and then you get lots of meat. No (real) hunter kills just to kill, they either eat everything they kill or get the meat to someone who will.

Yeah! Or, you know, you get in your car, you listen to Ron and Fez, you run out of gas, so you need to fill up with more gas, you pay a tax on said gas, the tax money goes towards paying off government debt on the Iraq War, and suddenly you're the reason that some 6 year old Iraqi boy has no penis anymore because it got blown off by a ricochet from a gun battle between the US troops and some insurgents! How would you feel then?

I wish that was true, we'd have fewer of those big rats eating my crop and making business for the car repair shops. I guess you did say 'usually'. Here it seems to be all about the revinue for he state to hunting licences.

Any way, good shooting. I'm trying to figure out a way to justify a new black powder rifle and thinning the heard may just be it.
