My favorite was a Mr. Belvedere where a kid with AIDS moves into the 'hood. Westley was friends with him but when the neighborhood kids learn that the kid has AIDS they stop hanging out with him. Their parents don't let them hang out with him either (its always the parents are bigoted dickheads in these special episodes). Anyway Westley took a stand and still hung out with his friend with AIDS
At the end of the episode, where Mr. Belvedere writes his thoughts in his diary (to sum up the episode) he writes "this is when i usually write something about life and the world in a poignant summary. but not today. i don't feel like it". And then there was silence that bled into the end credits. Silence cuz of AIDS

When Dudley got touched by Mr. Carlson on Diff'rent Strokes. Did he really have two little black kids take showers after watching cartoons? I could never figure that out.
I think Channel 5 in New York showed that episode 2 or 3 times a year in syndication.

Dammit, you beat me to it. I was always wary of my refrigerator after that, like it was going to try and devour me when I wasn't looking.
Can we disqualify Blossom from this discussion? It seemed like every episode was a goddamned special episode, and not just because the casting of Blossom seemed like an "aw, you're so special" gesture to all the uglies out there.

Diff'rent had a lot of those type pf episodes.
How about the one when Arnold and Kimberly was held captive by some guy who wanted to rape her. Arnold escaped and had to be hypnotized to remember where Kimberly was.

Definitely not a sitcom, but I remember an episode of Dragnet where I think both of these parents were getting high and they left their baby in the tub and it drowned and the mom just starts screeching when she sees it. That scared the piss out of me when I was little.

How about "Running Zack" where Zack learned all about Native American culture?
Or when Carlton overdosed on Will's speed on "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air"?
I always liked when Will's dad showed up and then left again...."Why don't nobody want me man??"

Another one I liked was the Fresh Prince where Carlton does speed. Will gets some speed given to him by some kid to help with studying. He leaves it in his locker and Carlton goes and takes it thinking its achne medicine or something. Then he's at a party dancing like a maniac til he ends up in the hospital. Uncle Phil was not pleased.

The episode of the Cosby Show when Mr. Huxtable finds a joint hidden in Theo's textbook, but Theo was holding it for someone else... or some shit like that. The plot sucked enough that I can barely remember it. If you're in school, a joint doesn't last long enough to be hidden in a text book, that's lunacy.

Stop The Drilling, Stop The Oil
I liked the Tom Hanks on Family Ties one as well, but no one has mentioned this one, so I will.
Matthew Perry guesting on Growing Pain, getting killed drunk driving, and then they had a special message after the show was over about the dangers of drinking and driving.

It had to have been when little Randy Taylor got diagnosed with cancer.
Or maybe when Jesse Spano had to acknowledge her addiction to caffeine pills:
"I'm so excited! I'm so excited! I'm so...so....scared!"

There was an episode of "Family Ties" where Alex was taking speed I think so he could cram for his exams...
His one time hippie parents had to teach him the dangers of recreational drug use...
