View Full Version : I Think Someone May Have Stolen My Identity!!! HELP!

So here's the story. I found out at work today that someone had tried to file for unemployment benefits using my social security number. My boss recieved a letter at work about it b/c it was my social security number(so my company's name popped up), and my boss wrote a letter back to the unemployment bureau about it being someone under a different name, who had written my number on their application for benefits.
It may just have been a typo by someone and not a straight up attempt at fraud, but just in case, I ordered my credit report and am going to talk to the social security fraud department tomorrow. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

I don't think it was him. Actually I am pretty worried though, about my credit getting ruined and whatnot.

Don't sweat it kid; this could be a good thing. It's the perfect time to fake your death and start over. Not many people get this opportunity.
Man, if someone stole MY identity, they'd probably beg me to take it back...

Sunndoggy,
Please do not take this lightly. Yes, it may be just a typo, but there are way too many f*d up people out there who can do a lot of harm! Call the three national credit reporting organizations immediately to
place a fraud alert on your name and SS#. This actually did happen to a friend of mine ("Urban legend," withstanding) and it took MONTHS to straighten the mess out. The "alert" you place means any company that
checks your credit knows your information was stolen and they have to
contact you by phone to authorize new credit.
Like I said, better safe than sorry! And while it could be just a mistake, I wouldn't want to see you go through what my friend went through!
Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742
Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289
Social Security Administration (fraud line): 800-269-0271
Good luck Sunndoggy!

Yeah, on second thought ASF's idea sounds a lot better than faking your death. For some reason, that's always my first instinct, though. Dog ran away? Fake your death. Out of sugar? Fake your death. Paparazzi won't leave you alone? Well, you get the idea...

Seriously, do what Alice said. It's not an urban legend, but it hasn't happened to anyone I know. It's important to protect yourself before they screw your credit and everything else.

go through your recent credit card bills. look for anything strange. i'm not talking purcheses from local porn shops(i'm sure that's normal for you), but items bought at locations you've never been to. I had this happen to be but i stoped it early. Someone bought camping equipment in Maine using my credit card number.
