I'm borrowing this from a friend who has been raving about this non-stop all month. It's a tactical RPG from Sega in a cel-shaded painted style. I've just started out but I have to say that this may end up being one of my favorite games all year. The gameplay is fantastic. The best comparison I can make is X-Com. It's turn based with a slight real-time twist. When you select a character at each turn they have a bar which limits how far they can travel. The character can attack once a turn. You can use a character unlimited times during your side's turn at the expense of other character's moves. Once you select your character its real time. You move around as if it were a third person shooter. If you come into an enemies visual range they will start firing. If you wander around to long or get too close to a tank you'll be dead before you can even attack. It's very intuitive and challenging, though not as crushingly so as X-Com. And it's very addicting. There are 5 character types and tanks. It's in depth but easy to pick up. I haven't even scratched the surface in describing the battle system. There's squad building and progression like X-Com, characters can die in battle like X-Com (though its easier to save them here) and you upgrade weapons and equipment like X-Com. Unlike X-Com the game is very linear.
I hear the story is great but I haven't got far enough in to judge. The characterization thus far is great though. I don't hate a single character yet, and I usually hate a couple in JRPGs. I actually like all the characters thus far. The voice of Bender in Futurama does voices in this game, and one gay character in particular has a voice straight out of Futurama. He didn't change it at all, I recognized it instantly.
Anyway for the very few of you who have PS3s out there and like RPGs check this out. It's PS3 exclusive. Thus far its so good I'm pissed at myself for trying so long to get Fallout 3 to work and playing that before I started this. It's early but I like this better.
