I got pulled over today and got 2 tickets.
How can I find out how many points are currently on my license?
I am worried that lets say I have a few tickets and I get pulled over again, and lets say I had too many points, could my license be suspended without me knowing it, or am I like one ticket away or whatever? Id like to know.

if your license gets suspended due to having too many points you'll recieve notice in the mail from the dmv
as for finding out how many you currently have try the dmv website

i've tried looking it up before, but only found sites where you have to pay to find out your points. the dmv website does have a good description of how many points you get for each violation.

Do you know any cops? They can run your info and tell you?
Do you have insurance? Your insurance company will know?
Call the dmv as well.

Right now, you still have as many points as you had before the tickets because you didn't plead guilty on the tickets.
If your license was currently suspended, the cop would know before he ticketed you.
Do the following:
Go Here:
http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/driverabstract/default.html
That's how you get an idea of how much trouble you're in.
Then, see what you can do about pleading down the tickets to non-point offenses. Talk to your prosecutor, just don't sign the tickets and mail them in.
What did you get busted for if you got two tickets? Speeding and no docs? Something broken?

I was pulled over on the LIE for doing 72 in a 55 and he gave me a ticket for that, and he gave me another ticket for an unsafe lane change. He also gave me a ticket because I only had an expired insurance card, but he checked and he knew I had insurance and said that that one will be thrown out if I get my insurance company to give me a letter of proof of coverage.
Do you think I should try and fight the other two? I was thinking of something along the line of saying my signal light was out and have my mechanic write me a bill for replacing the bulb. Would that work? Or am I screwed? He also gave e a card that shows that the failing to signal one is like $180.00 alone. I have no idea of the speeding one. 72 in a 55.
How do I plea them down? I have a commercial license. They also have a defensive driver course where I work and I did it last time. It knocks points off, right?

Kentucky likely does not share your traffic ticket info so you should be fine and not have any points on your license. I've received a few tickets over the past couple of years in Jersey and none of it is ever shared with New York so I have no points at all.

Thanks Matt. I ordered my abstract. At least I will know where I stood before these points. Hopefully I can try and talk to the judge. But I never did this before and wonder what I could or should say and if it will actually do anything that will help me.

Okay, thanks everyone. Now, here is another important question. I know I was wrong to do what I did. It was raining and I was speeding and changed lanes a few times. I know I am an aggressive driver. I would like it of course if I did not get these tickets, but I did. The date on the tickets is January for the court date. Do I even try and fight it? It was raining and I was doing 72 in a 55 and he gave me a ticket for speeding and unsafe lane change.
How would I go about fighting it? I really do not know people who get these kinds of things. My insurance offers safe drivers classes. So does my company. I do not drive professionally anymore, but I do have a CDL license.

I’ve found that it’s always worth “fighting it”. By that I mean pleading not guilty and showing up for court. In my half a dozen or so tickets over the years the act of appearing has always resulted in some plea opportunity and a reduction in points/fines.
Most recent case – over the summer I was pulled over by a Newburgh cop while getting on 84. He wrote me for 42 in a 30 and failure to signal. I pled not guilty but DID NOT request a supporting deposition. Supposedly supporting depositions just mean more paperwork for the cop and make him/her more apt to show up and bust balls. Court night I met with the town prosecutor, she recommended a plea and I went into the court. The judge summoned me and I pled guilty to parking on the sidewalk – $150 fine, no court fee, no points on the license. Pay the cashier on the way out. Everyone who was on line with me to talk to the prosecutor pled to the same violation. I saw fine amounts vary from $40 to $250 depending on the severity of the offence.
I’m guessing you were pulled over by a State Trooper which means he/she will probably be there on court night. In all of my thruway tickets I’ve always met with the trooper before court and talked/pled with them directly. If your not an ass they usually come up with a plea that generates the revenue but doesn’t end up with points on your licence. Especially if you play up the CDL- I drive for a living – angle. Long ass post, I hope it helps.

i got one on the thruway in september & the trooper who gave it to me told me to just plead not guilty & it should get knocked down. so i had court last month & the judge asked me if i wanted a trial or a reduction to a non moving violation with a fine. i said reduction so he knocked it down to a parking ticket. still $100 fine, but totally worth it. & worth the hour drive to new paltz & back.

Wow, thanks! That will probably help a lot. It looks like my court date would be a morning appt. and it will probably be worth it to take the day off work. It was not a state trooper, but rather a Nassau County Hwy cop in an unmarked car. So, do I have to mail the tickets in as pleading Not Guilty? I didnt really read them yet, only saw the date on them. It was hard to read what the cop wrote on them.

read the tickets. the date on the ticket may just be a "please respond by..." date & not a court date. a lot of people made that mistake when i went to court.

Dunno what it is like in your state, but I got in trouble with points once. I contacted the PA DMV, and was given the option to come in on a saturday to take a "points test", basically like a written verrsion of the license/permit test. Once completing and passing it, it shaved points off my record. This was a while ago, and I can't seem to find info on it in PA anymore.
You may wanna check and see if they offer this.
Dunno where you are, but I think I found something for jersey: http://www.safemotorist.com/NewJersey/Defensive_Driving.aspx and it is an online course.
This course is eligible for a 2-point reduction and offers a mandatory insurance discount for 3 years upon successful completion of the course. Now, let’s get started! Click the button below to take the American Safety Council – New Jersey Safe Motorist course.
