There are things that go on in sports that make no sense to me. They're perceptions and notions that people seem to accept without questioning, and you just wanna yell "What? Why do you think that?"
Here's one to me, that came to me as I read yet another story of Florida State players getting arrested for acting like thugs (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/ncaa/11/26/fsu.arrests.ap/index.html?eref=sircrc): why does Bobby Bowden get such a pass for running a program that's so sleazy and full of criminals? We kill "The U" for being a thug program, but Bobby Bowden cheats his ass off and recruits out of prisons, apparently, and he's beloved as this father figure for all college sports. It's just amazing to me. The best explanation I can come up with is that he's just good at playing the part of the sort of gullible hayseed, "Aww shucks, I can't do nothin' with these boys, I'm just here to coach me some football," and, of course, he wins. But he really should be getting killed far more than he is.
You got something like that that just puzzles you?

Why people love NASCAR.
I'm always amazed at how overrated some players are merely because they play in a big media market. Jeremy Shockey was never anything more than an average tight end, but because he played for the Giants he was an almost automatic Pro Bowl selection and people talked about him like he was bound for the Hall of Fame. Now that he's in New Orleans I expect him to fade into obscurity. Ditto for countless Yankees and Rangers over the years.
And I wouldn't worry about those Florida players; the Bengals will gladly take 'em.

why so many great college athletes flounder in the pros.
while unheard of 12th round selections go on to greatness
i'd hate to be in charge of drafting players.

I always found it mysterious that people would wear jerseys with other people's names on them. Many times years after the player had long gone.

Yes but what if he's your favorite player of all time? I see nothing wrong with that.
