Tonight I went to a sale event at a retail buyer who was trying to unload merchandise to make room for more stuff. Basically it was a nice junk sale, sort of like the stuff they sell in Home Goods stores. I am walking around these tables, collecting stuff to buy and I see this distinguished looking man who looks awfully familiar. I look a little more and realize it is Tom Guolotta, former Nassau County Executive. So I introduce myself to him and shake his hand and start a conversation with him. He was very nice and he gave me his card.
It got me thinking about bumping into other semi-famous people. Once I had a delivery route and I met Jackie Martling once at his house and Boomer Esiason another time.
Did you ever bump into near celebrities? What was the circumstances and how did you handle it?

the first time i ever saw ESD on the N train (when he lived in queens), i was totally star-struck. i was actually listening to r&f on my mp3 player, which was kinda weird, hearing Dave in my headphones while i was looking straight at him.
he was wearing these gigantic headphones and playing a very elaborate pete townsend style air guitar while the train was moving. i didn't even say anything to him, i was so taken aback.
also, i saw Richard Bey in a bar once (allegedly) trying to score some coke.

I waited on the singer from the Bloodhound Gang a few times when I worked at Starbucks. He was a nice dude, and grabbed me a cd out of his car because I made conversation about a band on his label.

I saw Keith Richards in the city. I stood up and my purse fell and spilled on the floor. It was classic.

Casey posted right before Dave did. I was hoping we'd get our first Julianna post after that. The family that posts together stays together!

Near-famous:
1 - My ex & I were bored one night a few years ago so went to the soon-to-be-closing Bradlees in Clifton NJ (it is now a Kohl's). Everything was about 90% off & the store was about as empty as I've ever seen a store while you were still allowed to come in & shop. I felt like trash just walking into the place, but went in for a goof anyway. Didn't find anything worth purchasing, but we did see the chubby black chick from the original NY cast of MTVs the Real World.
2 - I was in Dave & Buster's with spoon, Snoogans, Justice, & Snacks a couple of years ago (might have been around Snoogans' birthday) & I saw this young redheaded guy that I could swear I knew but couldn't place. Since we were near Sloatsburg, NY I tried to convince myself it was Spaz, but I wasn't sure. It hit me the next day out of the blue that it was the wacky guy from the first season of the YES Network show where the four fans follow the team all over the country.
Famous, if only in this area:
3 - While attending game 3 of the 1999 World Series, I left my seat a little while before first pitch & went to get a few beers. I was seated in section M7, which I guess is near the press entrance. As I came around the corner & while trying to squeeze past a line that didn't lead to beer, Christopher "Mad Dog" Russo ran right into me. His head was on a swivel (this was during the days of the Yankee Haters' Crack Committee, so I guess he was waiting for someone to throw something at him)...too bad he wasn't looking straight ahead. He bounced off me, looked at me with a smirk that said "sorry, please don't eat me," and continued on his way. I turned around to watch him leave & saw him run into about 4 more people before turning the corner & leaving my field of sight.

Interesting you say that, I was at a July 4th party out on Long Island...actually YOU were there also. I barely got in the door when out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw Joba Chamberlain extending his hand out to me to shake it. I turned to him and saw it was actually Matty Fridays. True story.

I was on the sidelines at a Patriots game a couple of years ago and during warm-ups, Deion Branch ran an out route and almost ran into me. I said "Hey Deion". He said "Hey man, what's up?" He's near-famous enough.
Or I could tell the story of how John Tutorro helped me pick out a sweater for my Dad several years ago at the Banana Republic on Bleeker Street.

I've met so many, but the only one I literally bumped into was JFK Jr. outside my work building. I mean we smacked into each other which resulted in a "are you ok i'm fine sorry ha ha" conversation. I had no idea who he was until I saw the look on the women's faces I was with.

Me and a group of friends were waiting for a table at Houstons next to the Loews at Roosevelt Field when we saw that mixed-race chick from Real World New Orleans walk in. We were on the fence about saying something to her, but she was so D-List that it wasn't even worth it.

Miriam Garron, one of Bobby Flays assistants on Throwdown came to my stand at the Farmers Market in Brooklyn a few weeks ago and chatted with me for 20 minutes ... she was very cool.

I concur. I once "chicken winged" Eric Clapton on Madison Avenue because he wasn't looking where he was going.

How do you people not remember 'Real World' names? For shame.
In my house, Heather B. from NY and Melissa from NO are just plain famous.

I saw Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Quasi) at an after-hours guitar store sale, years ago. She gave me the "rock chick nod", which I am still pleased about. A couple years after, I saw her and Stephen Malkmus cheating at bar trivia via cellphone.
Last year, I had a brief conversation in green-room with Patton Oswalt. We have the same kind of dog. His is named Grumpus.
My husband nearly hit Johnny Marr (Smiths, Electronic) with his car last year.

And I once saw The Rock's suv at the Miami International Airport parking garage. Who else would have a plates that say Maivia on them.

Louie Anderson was online behind me in Starbucks in New Brunswick once. I was getting my order and heard the voice behind me.
I think he was doing a couple nights at the Stress Factory.
I remember thinking - "hey that's Louie Anderson" and then "I don't have shit to say to Louie Anderson" and then leaving.

This is more on the famous side but......today i went to see "All My Sons" on Broadway. 2 rows in front of me? Mr. Tom Cruise, Mr. David Beckham, Mrs. Victoria Beckham, and Mr. Jimmy Smits. Above us on the balcony was John O'Hurley (aka J. Pederman). After the show I said hello to Beckham, Posh and Tom. Tom eyed me up and down like I was somebody famous and he should recognize me from somewhere. It was pretty awesome.

I completely forgot that once while I was driving in Glen Cove, I dropped my phone onto the floor and while I was reaching for it, I drifted into the next lane and almost side swiped John McEnroe who was in a Mercedes next to me! He starts honking and giving me the finger and I see the look on his face when he realized that I just realized who he was and he tore ass into Locust Valley.
