Dear Dr. Steve:
My wife got sick a week or so ago - got the o-t-c Sudafed with the pseudoephedrine. She took it for 3 days and when she "stopped it" she got the worst headache she's ever had. An ice pick.
I then got the cold - took some of the Suda-crank - and last night I had an nearly life-ending cramp in my leg. I literally blacked out from the pain. I know - I'm a big baby. But this thing whipped my ass.
I don't ever have calf cramps - my wife never has headaches.
Is this pseudoephedrine related...or just a couple of random take downs?
I did some googling but couldn't find any clear answers.
Thank you sir. I will pay on my way out.

I'm no doctor, but the headache and leg cramps sound like classic examples of dehydration to me. You've got to drink tons of water when taking cold meds because as they dry out your sinuses, they leave you with no fluid in your body.
Hey Dr. Steve - If I'm right can you buy me dinner again? Thanks!

I didn't know you could still get Pseudoephedrine OTC. Maybe just not here. The meth thing has been running rampant around here so you cannot get the stuff anymore. \
There is some other alternative that doesn't work for shit. I miss the Pseudoephedrine.

You have to ask the pharmacist for it. You don't need an rx...but maybe it's illegal in some places...and whatever the new stuff is, yeah, doesn't do anything...

To get my over the counter allergy meds, I need to go to a pharmacy counter and show them my driver's license so they can write down all my info before I can get it.

You should have thought of that before setting up your meth lab

that's correct. They took it off the shelves and also limited the amount you can purchase at a time due to people grinding them up and making drugs out of it.
If I remember correctly they are also used in meth labs.

Yep. It is a key ingredient.
My brother in-law used to make the shit. After a 1 year in the can, he is recovering. He says that he ABSOLUTELY cannot take sudafed cuz it sends him into a downward spiral of craving meth.

Does working in a meth lab give you colds?

I can't take pseudoephedrine...at all. It makes my heart race. Same reason I can't drink caffeine. Any upper like that just makes my heart race. It sucks.

Is this the wrong place to say that I tried Stacker 2 years ago, with real ephedrine, and couldn't deal with it for more than a few days, so I may own a bottle or two of real ephedrine still?
(Legal to own, illegal to sell, kids)

Here, you must get pseudoephedrine from the pharmacist -- and you must show ID, and sign a register recording your purchase.
Several episodes of "Breaking Bad" dealt with Walter's difficulties obtaining enough pseudo to make his product -- until he figured out a way to make meth without it.

All the cool kids are taking I-57 Ignite.
Better than Ephedra. It contains the all natural Brazilian herb Cha de Bugre.

First off, my friend, sorry I missed this post originally. You must have used your powers to create a new thread directly...I'm so stupidly a creature of habit that if a thread doesn't start in the "ask doctor steve" thread I don't even see it.
I then got the cold - took some of the Suda-crank - and last night I had an nearly life-ending cramp in my leg. I literally blacked out from the pain. I know - I'm a big baby. But this thing whipped my ass.
I don't ever have calf cramps - my wife never has headaches.

I still owe you for the theme song, so don't worry, your currency is no good here, my friend.
Pseudoephedrine is commonly used for nasal and eustachian tube congestion. Its mode of action is that of a vasoconstrictor, meaning it causes blood vessels to constrict. In the nose, this means less blood flow and less fluid leaking out from leaky capillaries, resulting in shrinking of the nasal tissues and opening of the airway. The most common adverse reactions are excitability, nervousness, and rapid heart beat.
Now, I can make an argument that some people could have a headache after the vessels in the head constrict for awhile then dilate after the drug wears off (that's kind of how migraines are thought to work), but it'd be unusual. More likely the airways closed up again after the pseudoephedrine left her system and she blocked off a sinus, causing a severe headache.
The leg cramp I have no good theory for; I vote coinkydink on that one, though the only way to find out would be to try the stuff again and see if it happens again.
hope this helps.
your pal,
steve
