ok so i went to this bar the other day called "The Pub", they have a lot of "Black & Tan" varieties

they had a thing called a "Black Velvet", it was half draft Guiness and half draft Strongbow. I don't like strongbow by itself, but together it was soooooooooooooo fucking good. I want to drink those way more often

Bass from the tap was my first love (beer wise). Ive since moved on but I still grab a bass when I see it n draught. Used to drink it at this place called something Green or Green something on 16th street when I was 18/19. Great days.

Always preferred Samuel Smith and Newcastle to the Bass ale meself. Interest piqued in Strongbow. Will investigate tomorrow, give report by midnight. Most likely will forget/stop caring before then.

Bass was my first favorite beer too, now its yuengling. If I'm n a place that has it on tap (which is rare anymore I agree) I'll get a glass.

The onset of micro brews pulled me away I like a more hoppy pale ale now.

I still like Bass but i never buy it in a store.

At a bar I will get it if they dont have a local brew.

Lifes too short and with the 1000s of craft beers out thre I gotta mix it up

omg
when i was in england in 2000, i drank strongbow nonstop. pound-pint nite was the worst. i remember taking the train back to kingston and having to get off at .. umm.. wembly station was it? i stumbled off the train, leaned up against the first lightpole on the platform, pulled out the hog and hosed down the platform with at least a gallon of used beer. the folk on the train were mortified at this silly american; it took me an extra 2 hours
to get back to the house, but it was the best piss of my life.

Yes. Bass is the "Tan" part of a Black-and-Tan.

I think they use Harp

Are you kidding? You have to be kidding.

I don't think I've had a Bass in years, though I do enjoy it. Honestly, if I can get it, I prefer to have a Boddington's or Smithwick's if I'm in an ale-drinking mood and there's no Sam Adams on tap.

I'm pretty sure it's Harp. No self respecting Irishman would mix Guinness with English Dog Piss.

Guinness and Bass is a "Half and Half."

I agree that no self-respecting Irishman would mix an Irish stout with a British ale, but you have to make an effort to find an actual from-Ireland-Irish Irish bartender.

And all the bars around where I used to drink make 'em with Bass.

And, incidentally, we're both right according to this here FAQ:

I addition to having Guiness with Bass and Harp, I've also had it with Smithwicks like the FAQ above says. But when I had it that way, I think it was called a Black and Red. I've also seen Guiness with Cider which is called a Snake Bite in some bars.

I don't know, I think they're all yummy except the cider one, but that's because I'm not big on cider in general.

I've only heard of one thing called a Snake Bite and that's a shot ... Yukon Jack and lime juice.

The bass/guinness is a "black and tan". (which incidentally was the nickname and uniform colors of the hated British army in Ireland around 1918.)

The harp/guinness is a half & half.

Bulmer's or Magner's cider/guinness is a black velvet.

The Smithwick's/guinness is an "all Irish black and tan"- a marketing ploy from the makers of Smithwick's that came out about 3 years ago..

A smithwick's with a small guinness top is called a "special" by some dudes from County Mayo.

NOTE: You're not likely to ever see an Irishman mix anything with a Guinness.

good point well made sir.

1. guinness is fine as it is
2. im not gonna drink something named after the black n tans

macvittie- strongbow is english alcoholic cider. not as sweet as Magners/Bulmers and far cheaper.

remember going to a stag night and we were only allowed to drink 'purple nasties' cider/beer and blackcurrent. worst hangover ive ever had.
