For those in the chat room Friday night who requested it (Snoogans, BrittanyPablo, etc...)

Tulum (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=tulum,+qr,+mexico&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=37.819897,62.138672&ie=UTF8&ll=20.216053,-87.451429&spn=0.16753,0.242729&t=h&z=12) is about 100 miles south of Cancun. We took an excursion off the cruise ship, which stopped in Cozumel--took the ferry across the water, and then took the bus another hour south of Playa del Carmen.

This one building was extensively carved and had remnants of paintings

Tulum was not a particularly notable mayan city during it's existence, but it was a spectacular location for the ruins, right on the water

great pictures, thanks for posting. Tulum is great. We spent a nice Christmas there last year. excellent beach and it wasn't too expensive.

We chose the horseback ride through the medicocre ruins in Cozumel, rather than Tulum.'You may have made the right choice.

the flip side is we got no time in Cozumel. After the ferry and bus ride we had about an hour at the ruins, and then an hour and a half at the beach. But the beach was awesome.

Oooh pretty, I'm having flashbacks! The only time I've been to Mexico was when I was in 7th grade or something. We stayed in Cancun but took a daytrip to those ruins and I went snorkeling for the first time. It was awesome!

Thanks for sharing.

We thought Tulum was a big let down. There isn't much left and what is left isn't much of anything.

If you have a choice between this and Chichen Itza (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chichen_Itza) then skip Tulum and go with the big daddy of ruins, or, skip Tulum, make a right, and go to Coba (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coba), which is only a bit down the road and not as busy.

On the road to Tulum there are a bunch of cenotes (caves) that you can go snorkeling in. We stopped at one on the way to Tulum and it was awesome. Snorkeling through underground caves its fascinating. Everyone should try it when they are down there.

Cozumel is great though, been there twice, second time was for my wedding on the beach. It's good stuff there. Playa del Carmen is a great party town too, when we were there we stayed at some crazy boutique hotel called Hotel Basico (http://www.hotelbasico.com/).

that shit RULES. You can go swim or surf and walk out of the ocean, up some steps and into Mayan ruins.

I plan on visiting these ruins in the spring of 2013.

Do you think I am putting it off too long?

I spent a week in Tulum earlier this year. It was a great getaway. Not touristy and the beaches were gorgeous.
