Dr Steve

For the past year I have been coughing only at night (When in bed). Once I wake up it seems to stop and I feel fine. I have mild asthma and smoke about 1/2 pack a day. I'm on Pro-Air and Phexophenadine

Coughing at night only is often due to "post nasal drip"...if you have "mild asthma", you likely have allergies, too. Mucus draining from the nose works it's way to the back part of the throat when you're lying down, causing a nocturnal cough. This can be treated with non-drowsy antihistamines (like Claritin, Allegra, or Zyrtec), and/or nasal steroids.

Other causes of nocturnal cough are cigarette smoking (you gotta quit, you know it already without me telling you), and asthma, so you may have a Trifecta of cough triggers.

People with asthma who smoke are at increased risk for developing emphysema (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD), so please talk to your doc about quitting smoking ASAP! I used to be a three-pack a day smoker, so I can empathize with you in your tobacco habit, but the other side of that is...if I could quit, anyone can.

Good luck with it!

Sorry to bump an old thread Doc. Saw my Doctor and it turns out my lungs are in fine shape and I don't have asthma it turns out that I'm getting a nasal drip at night due to my allergies (Just as you predicted!). He told me to Netti pot and gargle with warm salt water at night. So far it's been a week. No more coughing

Necessary disclaimer: Medical student in Germany

I won't talk about diagnoses of others, nor will I disrespect Dr. Steve on his own forum when he's an actual physician. I will only talk of my experience.

Seemed to be a combination of a bunch of things, such as becoming sensitized to allergens (likely at a summer internship dorm), and led to what is more accurately described as "asthma-like symptoms", as my pumonologist was fairly hesitant to brand me an asthmatic. My condition is mostly under control using Rabeprazole and loratidine. One of the issues I had, which seemed to develop simultaneously was the acid reflux. In the embryologic development, there is a relationship between the upper GI tracts and the airways, and they can react to reflux, according to the pulmonologist. I learned about the development, but never thought such a connection would still exist. Anyhow, everything was always so fucked up from the acid, and hypersensitive, the goddamn post nasal drip did it, but I wasn't too thrilled about the only resolution- guaifenesin with pseudoephedrine. I have lots of nasal problems, and the steroids help only to a small extent.

So in the end, the acid reflux, and post nasal drip was treated and I do ok now. My fucking insurance company wouldn't pay for loratadine in the US before it went generic, but I had to try it and paid for it until it went as a schedule 8 classified generic (for pharmacy distribution only packaging) and was way cheaper behind the counter as an OTC instead of on the shelf.

I m no doctor but you should try to breathe boiling water for 10 minutes and drink honey lemon tea. You try it for 3 days to see if it gets better.
