So my wife and I are having a little get-together this evening (a "Special Delivery" listening party, if you will) and we were discussing snacks. Now, I never snack. I usually just eat meals. My idea of a snack is a small sub instead of a large. So when she asked me what I wanted, I told her chicken fajitas and chicken cacciatore. She said they weren't meals, but I said if we put little bowls next to a vat of chicken cacciatore or really small tortillas next to the chicken fajitas, that would make it a snack. She still disagrees.
What constitutes a snack? I feel its the size, not the ingredient. My wife disagrees.

Small enough to eat in one bite, off of a napkin or small plate.

my borderline "is this a snack or a meal" type food is a peanut butter/jelly sandwich. I think one slice of bread folded over is a snack...2 slices of bread is a meal

Chips out of a bag = snack
Crackers & cheese = meal

I agree with Rouski, miss Snacks, he was a cool poster
nope Chicken Cacciatore is a main course dish
smaller portions does not make it a snack
finger foods are usually snacks, there are some exceptions of course
fondue is an example of that

i think to be a snack you can't have more than 2 steps
so opena bag of chips, open a can of dip..thats a snack. get some chips and add melted cheese, sour cream, tomatoes, black olives, guacomole, ground beef? Thats nachos and thats a meal my friend

This thread lets me know that underdog has no respect for my mediocrity.

small plates and napkins = a snack
large plate with knive, fork, and spoon = a meal
Anything is a snack when it's served on small plates.

see, i think a snack does away with any kind of plate...thats papertowel town.
except maybe dessert stuff, like a slice of cake or ice cream...but are desserts always automatically considered snacks?
hmmm..i gotta give some careful thought about this dessert factor

Im ready to make my ruling. A snack is anything that tides you over between meals. Plates have no meaning because if you have have any dipping sauce to go with anything there is one container. Along with that dipping sauce you assume there is at least one if not more items to dip (chips, veggies, wings etc.) Silverware (or more likely plasticware/toothpics) can also be used for things that are considered appetizers. At a football party you can have chili as a snack and there is your spoon. Therefore I say that a snack is any portion that does not constitute a meal.
