From the Consumerist:

http://consumerist.com/5079541/high+end-supermarket-wegmans-slashes-prices-to-stay-competitive

We are lowering hundreds of prices in anticipation of our costs dropping in the future, and we intend to bring more prices down as soon as we can. These are uncertain times, and we know our employees and customers are very concerned, and so are we. During difficult times like these, it’s okay with us if we make a little less money. And, as always, we are committed to offering the lowest price in the market on the items most important to families. We hope these savings will help you enjoy your time with family even more this holiday season.

Hooray!

With gas prices looking to break lower than 2 bucks soon, they really can't use the "fuel expense" as an excuse.

cruise lines are still being cheap

2009 cruisers are stuck until March when the cruise line will deem if the gas prices are cheap enough to retract the fuel surcharge

Every grocery store in the country is doing this

Places like Giant, Shoppers, and Safeway have already instituted HUGE price rollbacks because

1) theyre trying to compete with walmart and other "big box" stores

2) theyre paying their employees a fraction of what they used to make, so its really affordable to them only because they've cut labour so much. Hurts the consumer because even though the price is low, there's no one there to put it on the shelf and/or make sure it gets put on the shelf, meaning lower quality and worse selection.

And things like this....

these are uncertain times, and we know our employees and customers are very concerned, and so are we. During difficult times like these, it’s okay with us if we make a little less money.

...are complete and utter bullshit, because theyre making the EXACT same money they were before, because theyre making up for the low prices by not spending on labour

Meanwhile, the FoodTown near us is actually jacking up their prices. $2 for a 2-liter bottle of Coke? Fawk you!

I take it you're not familiar with Wegman's. They are consistently ranked one of the best places to work in the United States and the compensation packages they have for employees are excellent. Much better than your typical Stop-and-Shop.

And BTW, you're in the US. No U in labor. Thanks.

Complete opposite end of the spectrum oh wait you're doing snoogan's bit.

No, Wegman's is a family-owned chain of grocery stores, with both regular groceries and more high-end products. Their store brand is very high quality.

They are mainly in NJ, PA, NY... I think they might be in DE and MD too, not sure.

Oh God, no.

Wegman's is awesome.

They're a chain of grocery stores with corporate offices based in NY state. They have stores in upstate NY, here and there in NJ and there are a couple of them out in PA.

People tend to think that they are pricier than a ShopRite or Stop and Shop, but I've found that, for most things, they are more reasonably priced than those stores. They also have a good number of quality store-brand items in pretty much every grocery category.

The one closest to me also has a wine shop. And the ones I've shopped in have AWESOME produce departments.

I even prefer the cashiers at Wegman's to any other store.

I love Wegman's.

Wegman's rocks my fat ass. Went there on a whim last year, and signed up for a savings club card the next day. The nearest one to us is 12 miles away, but the trip is worth it.

I solve the distance issue by bringing coolers and ice packs with me for transporting perishables.

Since they're encouraging everyone to bring their own bags anyway, it works out pretty well.

LOVE Wegman's. I've had a savings club card since the one in Woodbridge opened, but I recently re-did my account so I could access the cool features on the website.

Wegmans rules. Their meats and produce are fantastic. And wegmans brand goods are cheaper and better than most brand name items I have come across. There is one less than 5 mins from me and I'm there at least 3 times a week.

I thought it was going to be a lot more expensive at first simply because the store is extremely nice, has an awesome selection, and has things like a Sushi bar and cheese shop inside. However, the prices are as good or better than anywhere else I shop (like Giant or Acme).

I have been tremendously impressed with the selection, the quality of their store brand products, and their prepared foods section rules.

The only downside is that they don't have self-checkout. I have a personal dislike for dealing with people at the checkout counter so I love self-checkout, but a lot of people prefer the personal touch.

I heart wegmans.
I exclusively shop there now.

For some reason there isn't ONE good deli near me, so being able to get good cold cuts is killer.

The A&P and the other shit hole near me don't carry Boars head.

Funk Dat.

I also hear down by you there is no good italian bread down there. I see a retired couple that live in south Jersey that come up north just for the bread.

I usually hate cashiers and prefer self-checkouts too, but the ones at my Wegman's tend to be very personable and accommodating ... they will even ask me how I would like the grocery bags packed, something I think is absolutely great. (I had a guy hold up an express checkout lane at ShopRite once because he flipped out that the cashier had packed his hot, prepared food in the same bag as his ice cream. I'd be upset myself, especially if I'd requested otherwise, but I would just re-pack the bag once I'd finished paying and loading it into my cart. No big deal.)
