Any suggestions for a laptop/software for small-scale home recording? Not full-band live recording, but track-by-track overlayed stuff--maybe adding drums in later. I know pro-tools is the industry standard...anyone else have other suggestions or experience?

I am not sure but I think Audacity is a fairly simple free sound editor.

i'm gonna d/l the audacity because it is free and see what it is capable of. if i need something else, bootlegging will not be out of the question. i don't know what programs are compatible with what audio interface like firewire...i guess that is my biggest question--what set-ups do peope use? i've recorded a lot of stuff, but in studios and not on my own. i guess i should have paid better attention.

thanks for the input.

It really depends upon what you are trying to do. I haven't needed anything for technical recording jobs or anything other than personal amusement, but I really like Audacity. It is easy to work with and does everything I need it to do. Can't be beaten for a free app.

If you need something with real "recording and editing power" I am not sure if this is it, but Audacity does the basics very well.
