what's protocol for tips here 15-20 percent of the bill?
what happens if the server was rude and didn't give a shit, what then?
tonight my girl and I were tired and hungry so we went to a chain restaurant (east side marios) and our server wasn't nice, looked like she rolled out of bed and frankly didn't give a shit. so the bill comes at it was 47 and change. I left 50.
I know, dick move. but im so sick of tipping for shit service over and over again.

Way to play into Canadian stereotypes. 15 if the service is under par. 20 if good. More if exceptional.
Generally the server is taxed 8-10% of the total of the bill, because the state assumes that you will tip the server that amount. So if you tip below that level, in essence, he/she is PAYING to serve you.
Here is my rule. Start at 20%. Move to a floor of 15% if they really blow. Move to 25-30% if they rock.
So that tip of 6-7% would be considered a major dick move in the industry. If you go there again...I would advise against getting the soup.

15% if the service is decent
18% if it's not great, but the server is making an effort
20% for good service
22% + for exceptional, amazing service and food
<15% if the service is bad and the server specifically does something wrong, like getting an order wrong more than once or having an attitude

Or, complain to the Manager to get the bill lowered, then tip 20% on the lowered bill. You can leave guilt free but you're still fucking them over. Yeah!

i try to be as generous as possible in the 20% range (the math is really easy with .20 of the bill)
but if the service sucks, and contributes to a shitty experience ... i have no problem leaving a few bucks
particularly, if the server just forgets about you, or if something is ordered a specigic way -- say rare and the food comes well done, and then have the server explain to you that's how a rare steak looks

im always leaving 20 and above. but im just really sick of bs service and just plane servers not giving a shit. I understand that they rely on their tips. but im sick of leaving tips when they don't deserve. I will tip over and above if the service was where it should be or higher.

we once had really bad service at a local diner. we detailed on the bill how the server was crappy and screwed up numerous portions of our order and ignored us the whole time we were there. when we paid, the cashier asked if we wanted something removed from the bill, but no that wasn't our goal, we were just trying to help the establishment improve. we added about an 18% tip to the bill and didn't go there for over a year after that.

I usually tip 20 percent or more, but I hate when some bitch with an attitude thinks that the tip is part of her pay and I'm ripping her off if I tip less. I won't give less than 15% unless they really were rude, or dirty and sticking their fingers in my drink or shit like that. If they're rude to me or someone in my party, I'll give them absolutely nothing.
People need to understand that a tip is something extra for doing an exceptional job. Not just bringing a drink or a plate but being extremely nice about it. This is why I hate places that force their help to throw all the tips into the kitty and split it up at the end of the night. A good, or great server should walk out at the end of a shift with a few hundred in tips, and the shit server with her attitude should be happy she scraped up an extra $10 in tips at the end of her shift.
If enough of the shit waiters or waitresses get bad tips or maybe no tips at all, enough of the time maybe they'd realize that they need to do a better job, or maybe they just aren't meant to be servers and need to find a new line of work. A good server needs to be good with people. Its not a job that every piece of shit can do. If you aren't a people person, who works well in customer service then maybe they should become morticians or something like that were nobody cares how they act.

at least in new york, you cannot force the pooling of tips. we have two properties and one pools and the other doesn't. it would be much simpler if both pooled (for tax reasons) but we cannot force them to do so.

Im not tipping any server wearing an Obama button. Their tip will go to the less fortunte homeless fellow in the park across the road.
Might as well get used to the redistribution of wealth.
Otherwise I leave 20-25% generally. ok 30% is she has big tits.

I tend to tip about the 18-20% area if the server is nice and is making an effort to make sure Im satisfied with my order or need a refill on drinks.
As a bartender I rely on tips to and kinda know the struggle now. So Im simpathetic but if the server is rude or if Im waiting for a while to be helped fuck that. I run around like a mad man when Im working and make sure no one waits for a fucking drink. If Im tipping you, I wanna see some kind of effort at least.

In regards to different tipping "rates" or customs.......don't Canadian servers recieve a higher minumum hourly rate of pay vs their American counterpart, thus less dependant on surviving on their tips?
I'm not sure what the minimum wage here in Canada is anymore $7 or $8? What about the U.S.?

Sunday is my slow day
Waiters/Waitresses get 20-25% unless they are rude dumb or slow
Rude gets you 15% or less
Slow gets you still 15%-20% if you are nice well under 15% if you slow and rude
Dumb gets you 15-20% if you are at least friendly
anything from $ 10 - $ 20 gets you a $5 (if 2 people are dinning) if you do your Job well

I hate that shit. I went to an italian place that has good food/good pizza but the waitress we got sucked ass. The pizza had to have taken atleast 40 minutes. It was a friday nite so obviously we're gonna have to wait for a pie. But c'mon, the girl didnt even come back for drinks, didnt give us anything to hold us over (a nice loaf of italian?????) We ordered, we got the food, we got the check
On the flip side I ate at a local diner the other nite and sat at the counter and the girl was over every 5 minutes to check on me. of course counter folk are lonely and need attention so..... anyway that was a 30% tip

Betcha she attributed the poor tip to you being cheap rather than to her being a bad server.
You said a mouthful there. I bet you're right. They won't take responsibility for being slow, rude or nasty to a customer.
I have a tip story, that is sort of related.
I had gone to a restaurant with a party of 10 people and as we were leaving at the end of the night we were stopped in the parking lot by the restaurant's owner as we got into our cars. He was yelling at us and loudly asked us if there was a problem with our meals. We said no and asked why? He said the waitress told him we didn't leave a tip. I told him he must be mistaken cuz I had left a very nice tip, more than 30%. The waitress came out and explained that he was talking about another party, that was seated at a table near ours. We had thrown the girl $200 cash on top of a $600 food and drink bill. They both apologized profusely for the mistake and she thanked us for the generous tip. The owner even offered to comp our next party, but we have refused to go back to the place because of the way he embarrassed us in front of all of their other customers that were in the waiting area, and in the lot, that heard him yelling at us when we left that night.
I still wonder what kind place would yell at customers like that. Even if he had yelled at the right party. Don't people have a right to not tip if they felt snubbed in some way? Maybe the girl was spending too much time bringing drinks to my table and the other table felt they were treated badly. I'd probably tip less in that case too.
A gratuity shouldn't be gratuitous. In my opinion they should be earned. Good servers get good tips and bad servers get squat. That's the way it should be.

The piece also talks about how Europeans view tipping.

11-03-2008, 08:55 AM
I hate when bad servers make assumptions that certain types of customers won't leave a good tip, and it's obvious in the way certain parties are treated.
When I was younger, I would notice that our server wouldn't give the same attention to our table as compared to a table of older, more established customers.
It was like, "oh great, a table of kids. Why waste time on them when I can service the ones I think might tip better".
So if you get this shitty service, and then don't tip well because of it, guess what? His/her "assumption" was proven correct, and the next group of kids will get the same treatment.
If you tip well, sure, there's a chance they might realize their error and improve service to the next group, but then you're the one that goes away feeling stupid for overtipping for shit service, and chances are that it won't be your group that sees any improvement. But chances are that one good tip is not going to change their opinion.
One of my first jobs was a "server's assistant" in a mexican restaurant, and the servers were supposed to tip us what they felt appropriate from their tips, so I learned the game early. And when I served at another restaurant, I actually did better than some of the women just on hustle and attention, for lack of a nice rack.
When we'd go out, if the service was bad, I used to leave a note with a bad tip explaining why, or say something to them directly when they brought the change / credit slip back, usually explaining that I was a server too at one time, and appreciate ($$$) when I am able to be the one receiving good service.
Nowadays, I'm with most of you. I'm an older white american male, usually dressed better than I was in my early 20's, and maybe that's why I haven't had as many bad experiences, so I'm usually at the 15% min, with no max. I've gone 50% or better on the bill for a great server. Most of the time I already have a dollar figure in mind before I even calculate the percentage.
But yeah, stereotypes suck. Just leaving a bad tip will only make it worse for the next party. I agree with those that said to at least speak to the manager if it was really that bad, if you don't have the nads to say something to the server directly. Or at least leave a note explaining why.

Do you realize how much money servers make per hour? My first waitressing job I think paid me $2.50/hour. Tips aren't extras on top of our salary. They are our salary. So when you don't tip or barely tip, it's basically the same as making us work for free. How would you like it if your boss told you he wasn't going to pay you for a day's work because you didn't look enthusiastic enough or smile as much as he had hoped?

I am normally a very good tipper. I tip usually at least 20 percent and if the service is real good I may do slightly more. However if the server sucks...... I get nasty. I come to have a relaxing experience and if my waiter/waitress is rude or can’t fill up my damn cup of water I will leave a shitty tip. I once had a bill that was about 33 bucks and the damn waiter never refilled my cup even though I asked several times. This took away my enjoyment from the meal and I left a buck and change tip.
