View Full Version : You Can Only Give To One Type Of Charity

In Aggie's "Trust Fund Kid" thread, many people said they'd like to give a good portion of their money to various charities and other causes. So I wonder, if you could only give to one kind of charity, what kind would you choose?
I'm sure all you good-hearted people would love to give to every charity out there but I'm asking you to pick just one.
Which causes do you feel the strongest/most passionate about? Which causes do you feel need the most attention now and in the future? Which ones do you feel would benefit the world most from your time and/or money? And which ones do you think are currently being overlooked by the general public and media?
Public poll to be posted soon..

I'm pretty sure a lot of our health situations are the result of environmental pollution. Without going liberal or conservative on this issue - it's pretty important. I'm a realist of course - I like tech stuff and modern living and realize there's a trade involved but I also believe in keeping the bow of the ship headed in the right direction regardless of where we are now.

children's advocacy groups. from all i have read about the subject, child abuse is some of the most depressing out there. any programs to help fight against these abuses and education to inform scumbags about the harm they inflict on children.
id also want to give money to after school programs and activities for kids. with many school budget cuts many after school programs have been completely cut out of schools. give kids something fun and engaging to do instead of just go home and play video games.

That's wonderful drjoek
I like when a program is developed to benefit both animals and people, like Guidedogs for the Blind or Farm Animals 4 Kids.

St. Judes. My dads parents donated to them. After they passed my dad then continued to donate to them. My dad passed away in 2000 and then my mom continuted it. She passed away in 2006. I keep it going.

Poverty and Health go hand in hand, but I went with health, including providing people with clean water, immunizations, and basic medical care, which would all fall under the umbrella of poverty as well.

i give my time and money to AA,not only did it help me 8 years ago but its 12 step program is used by 70 odd other groups.its the most succesful program for people that can get self honest to live a better life and doesnt solicite money from outside sources, unlike all the other groups on the list

i think i wouldn't waste my money with a charity.
I'd much rather give the money directly to someone, maybe start a local scholarship deal, or locally pay for someones healthcare etc.
so much of the money donated goes to support the charity it seems self defeating.

Poverty on two fronts: Immediate needs (food banks, etc.) and long-term needs (educational).

As PB stated about environmental ties to other issues, so does those with children. Whether it be poverty, human rights, health or many others, I just feel this is where most of my charity would go in this situation. However, and I'm sure this would tie in to many charities again, but I've always wanted to work with JFK's Peace Corps.
Still, most of my donations currently go to Health related charities and in retrospect I may do a little more in other areas.

I already donate to Health. My dad has had diabetes since he was 9, and is very sick with it now, so that is where my money goes. Yes it is selfish, but that's the way the world works.

I don't think that's being selfish and if it is then we are all inherently selfish. Nothing wrong with wanting to take care of the ones who have taken care of us, cause that's all you're doing. I guess it's only natural that we'd choose a cause that has had an impact on our lives, makes giving that much more worthwhile.

health of babies (march of dimes) or poverty of babies (unicef) [so babies, it is]
edit: i'm fairly certain it didn't say "children's advocacy groups" when i picked it earlier. that changes everything and wasn't the intent of my vote. :(

I'd say my charitable donations have been pretty evenly split among cancer research, my local public radio station and a local music conservatory scholarship fund. I've lost a lot of family members to cancer, so if I had to choose just one, I suppose I'd go with cancer research.
