View Full Version : Nu salt, no thank you

I recently discovered that at my work place all salt shakers had been replaced by Nu Salt. I tried it once and was not even sure it was salt, it tasted like some chemical garbage.

I watched a show the other day about salt and how it is still made the same way it always has been and how there are even salt snobs out there... as you can buy salts from all around the world and some are costlier than silver.
They actually have Salt tasting tours, much like a wine tasting would take place.
Bottom line, I would never ever attempt to replace the tasty goodness of real salt with something as toxic as Nu salt.
Have you tried it?

I have tried it and yes, it's gross! If you want something with a less sodium use sea salt. And who's the salt-Nazi (no offense) that replaced all of the regular shakers?

none taken and I wondered the same. How dare they decide to replace ALL of them. Thankfully I had stolen one earlier and had it stashed at my desk.

I read your "what's for dinner?" post earlier and I think that between the sodium content of Feta stuffed olives and anchovie wrapped capers, you might have exceeded your recommended salt intake for the remainder of 2008.

well, I took the dunder and mifflin ethics test and since the salt never left the premise it was technically not stealing but reorganizing

I brought 3 containers home with me from Argentina. Then went through customs.

Needless to say, I was brought into the back room.

Kosher and sea salt only. Sea salt can be costly. Unless you buy a large bag of it from an Asian market for 2 bucks.

i use kosher salt also. i learned from alton brown that courser salt does a better job at keeping your meat juicier.

When I was a kid, my mom made some sort of roast thing (but for some reason I think it was cooked on the stove in a big pot) that was coated in kosher salt. The salt created a shell around the meat that totally sealed the juices in. It's been a very long time, and she only made it once, so I don't even know what kind of meat it was. I just remember that it was absolutely incredible. I wish I knew what it was. It's been bugging me for decades.

Was it like a corned beef?
(The "corn" comes from the size of the salt crystals used, btw...)

Could be. All I remember is it was good. And it was about 30 years ago.

There is a recipe for this on the back of teh kosher salt box. Jeff did it and I was INCREDIBLY apprehensive that it was going to be gross and it was juicy and delicious. It was a beef roast. Look on the back of the MOrtons box. "Herbed Beef in Salt Crust".

Thanks, Missy! I have a box in the kitchen, and never bothered to look on the back.
Edit: I just looked on the box and they had a recipe for some Thai shrimp instead. I just googled it and found THIS (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Herbed-Beef-in-Salt-Crust/Detail.aspx). Does that sound like the one you're talking about?

My Uncle has high blood pressure and uses that shit. I accidentally used some of it when I was having dinner at his house and the stuff actually burned the inside of my mouth and made it swell up. Yecch.

They could have more accurately said "all salt was once in the sea". Salt from salt mines is very different than salt that is extracted from the ocean.

The episode of Good Eats called "Eat this Rock (http://www.foodnetwork.com/good-eats/good-eats-eat-this-rock/index.html)" is 100% about salt and all its marine deliciousness.
A.B. offers recipes including herbed beef in salt dough, oven-roasted shrimp and other yummies. It's got to be one of the best episodes EVER.
I linked the recipes above in case you want to check them out.
