I think I can answer this one for TooCute. Yes, she is of Asian descent - I believe she's half-Japanese, ethnically - BUT she's 100% all-American. She was born here, she was raised here, so she (rightfully) sees herself as American. She's Asian in heritage, yes, but her identity is as an American. She's a true patriot, and a wonderful human being.

But if you really want to know her secret....

I would agree with Too Cute. What difference doe my my genetic back ground make. My parents tell me I am of Irish, Welsch, English, Penn. Dutch and American Indian. But ask me anything about recent news in Ireland or what does it mean to be an Irishman, I couldnt tell you.
I am an American, born and raised here. Its a state of being that is above racial, and genetic heritage.
So dont be pre occupied with peoples looks, knowing that they are American is good enough in my book. Hell I dont care where they come from and thats good enough for me too. Knowing my "heritage" doesnt help you anyway, so why ask. My heritage were a bunch of poor people who came to america looking for a better life. They lived,served and died for THEIR country.
So being American, regardless of racial features is what I am talkn about baby.

Well, the thing to ask yourself is, at what point does your ethnic heritage cease to be a matter of unity and instead become a tool of division? With TooCute (and I feel bad for speaking for her, since this is just my own perception of her beliefs), she feels that her status as an American preceeds her Asian heritage. I'm sure she's proud of her racial background, and she should be. But if anyone asks her if she's Asian-American, she's going to tell the truth - she's American, period.

It's wonderful to embrace your heritage, but sometimes by doing so it can cause division. If you're too busy focusing on being Asian-American, or Italian-American, or Irish-American, or Whatever-American, than you may be overlooking the fact that we are all AMERICANS. We all have that in common, but sometimes we might lose focus of that.

I was born here in '79, and of course consider myself as American. But it seems that in this thread it sort of got into an "American above anything else theme", but I think of it more equally I guess. I'm proud to be American, of course, but I'm just as proud of my Asian heritage, and wouldn't trade it or consider one above the other in any way. Having both sides with me culturally has shaped who I am, and I wouldn't consider myself one over the other, just because I was born in NJ. I'm just as proud of that as I am to know that I have Asian heritage as well.

I take offense to that. Just because I said that I am proud of my Asian heritage, doesn't mean that I denounce my American heritage. That's a pretty big jump to make. Living HERE and saying that I'm proud of my heritage doesn't make me any less patriotically American than the next person.

I was never accusing anyone of not being proud of their heritage, and I'm not anyone to judge anyone on anything whether they're "good" or "bad" in regards to their religion or heritage or whatever, because that's a personal choice. The previous posts sounded a little like not many of you cared much for your culture, but again, that's a personal choice, and it sounds like I was wrong on that vibe.

What I was and am getting to is this<insert corny music here>...I'm proud of both parts of my heritage (my asian and american), and being proud of who you are and even exploring your culture, whether it's the one you were raised in or not, is something I think is great.

It actually can help you get perspective on a lot of things in your life, and make you see yourself from a different angle, which is why I replied in the first place. :)

My whole point and I will so shut up on this subject after this, is that all to often ethnicity is used all to often to drive wedges between peoples. Every major conflict has been fought over this subject, ethnicity. Look how quickly things got heated up in here, Over a silly subject.
Rarely does enthicity bring all the different people together, The personal relationships is the only important factor here. Its so easy to seperate, instead of come together. I think this is a good exercise to know that its the person we should care about, not thier looks

When I travelled through Scandinavia on vacation 3 years ago, I met many wonderful people who were eager to learn all about my friends and I. They wanted to know our traditions, our customs, and our way of life. They were curious about AMERICANS, and that was how we identified ourselves, even though all 4 of us are from completely different ethnic backgrounds.

Sure, we're all proud of our heritages, but the day we would let it seperate us in any way...shoot me.
