video game which all other games are judged

a couple weeks ago i got mlb 08 the show

most visually pleasing game ive ever played
incredible lighting effects and very good depth (almost every major league players batting stance and pitching stile accuratly represented
a few glitches and redundant actions (when on base and a ball is tipped off its frustrating that the runner behind you has the exact same animation as the main character(esp when you see it all the time))
but really sets the standard as game which all other games are visually judged


shooter-halo (gold standard, surry)
replayability/depth - jade empire (played all the way through multiple times on all difficulties)
mmorpg- WOW

No no no. Half-Life 2 is the correct answer. Just because there are millions and millions of teenagers and drunk frat brothers who can't tell the difference between that decent but generic shooter and real quality doesn't make difference.

Well to me Goldeneye on the N64 was the benchmark for shooters as it was the first to really have the ability to play your friends in a meaningfull way on one console

Mario Kart is clearly the racing game that started it all

NHL 94 is the sports game that was the best of all sports games and with the adapter you could play 2 v 2

Resident Evil is the benchmark for all Survival Horror games

Um, HELLLOOO Gordon Freeman has a gravity gun and he can simply use it to snatch Master Chiefs weapons away, and then if it's crowbar v. crowbar we all know who is going to win.

Yeah the game is pretty sick and i use the NHL 94 (the predecessor to the NHL games now) controls. I just dont like the lack of a speed burst button but eh what can you do. Also if you have Shot Power and Accuracy turned up goalies give up way to many easy goals

It changes for me depending on the year and style of game...but the last 2 years it's been Bioshock
I just want that kind of originallity and emersiveness in every game. If the game doesn't deliever on at least SOME of that, then I sell it. Why waste time?
