why dont you just get an external HDD for them?

Then you can save all your movies and stiff in one place.

and not spend money on CD's

I have a phillips divx/dvd player that has a usb port on the front for my divx in one room, the main TV has a hacked XBox with Xbox Media Center (XBMC) on it and damn, it is the best. I stream everything from my main pc to my tv set and stereo.

If your 360 or ps3 are networked in your home, then look into ORB (http://www.orb.com/)...it is an amazing piece of software that makes your media available over the internet and through your home network. If the destination is in your home network it automatically detects it and directly streams via the network. This way you dont lose the quality of the files like you do when streamed online. If you have a data connected cellphone, there is the bonus of being able to stream audio and video and even tv (if your PC has a tuner) to the phone.

Just a few options there. Why use physical discs anymore? They just clutter up the joint.

Just make sure you have the latest version of windows media player, and that your xbox and computer are connected to the same network. Turn your xbox360 on, then go to windows media player, and click library -> media sharing. Your 360 should be recognized, allow sharing to the device. Then click library ->add to sharing to select the folders that your avi files are on. For right now you can only stream wmv, and most avi files to your 360.

Now go to your 360 dashboard. Go to the media tab and select videos, push the blue button to change video source, and see if your computer shows up there. From there you can navigate through the folders you selected on your computer for sharing.

You can also do this with music, so you can play your own background music in games that are on your computer's hard drive.

xvid & divx files will play on the 360 natively - meaning if you load them on a disc or thumbdrive, it'll read them & play it. If you want to view MPGs and stuff you'll need to stream via orb.

I also have a phillips dvd player with the USB post and I love that damn thing - I watch more movies off my thumbdrives than I do DVD. I tried to hack my old Xbox to make it a media center but I ended up bricking it because it was one of the very first gen models and the softmod hack I used (Splinter Cell) somehow doesn't work on those models.

I got a Philips DVP5990 with an old external 160GB HD, it's fucking fantastic, 'specially since the Philips was only like $50 or $60 at Walmart. It plays just about any file I throw on the drive, with a few exceptions I can't think of right now.
