View Full Version : Tipping on Furniture Delivery

I did a search on this, I saw tipping on appliance delivery, but nothing really on furniture.

So here's the deal:

Two different furniture companies are delivering two orders of furniture.

They are all going on the first floor, with no stairs, and pretty easy access in and out.

The first order is a table and six chairs.

The second order is a couch, loveseat, and two other pieces.

How much is an acceptable tip?

I'm thinking $10 a head on the table and $20 on the sofa/loveseat delivery.

Is this correct?

Just had a 2 piece couch delivered yesterday too and I thought the same thing you did, about $10 a person but my bf gave them $20 each! I thought that was nuts. Thoughts?

Yeah, I paid 80 for the table and 90 for the sofa deal. Fortunately, the delivery charge was folded into my financing, so I got that going for me.

I really shouldn't have paid for delivery on the table. Once I saw how easy it was to build the table, I could have done it myself.

I would say more if it was upstairs and took a lot of time to set up.

When I got my couches delivered they literally walked in and put them right there.

I think I tipped the guys that delivered my mattress more... because it was a tempurpedic and heavy as fuck and took them a long time to get up the stairs.

The mexican/south american delivery guys also always get a kick out of the fact that my dog is named Pronto... I think at first they think I am yelling at them to hurry up, until they realize I'm talking to the dog

really? how is that cheap? He was probably charged 100 + bucks on delivery for each as well and the guys get paid from that... if they do 10 deliveries a day they would get 200 bucks in tips alone each, that's almost a 35 bucks hourly rate... gee, I would like to become a delivery driver then...

call me cheap, I am not used to tipping like that in Germany and it blows my mind how generous people are with money they don't really even have to spend...

These guys pick up your couch, carry it into the house, drop it and run... 10 minutes face time, not even 5 minutes work.... that surely does not earn 20 bucks each in my book.

If the house was hard to get to, they had stairs to climb or it was difficult to fit the furniture around corners and stuff... different story ... straight in and out I would not give more than 20 for the entire delivery.

Katja, the cheap remark was me breaking matty's chops. As for the amount that you compared to what I tip, I am an over tipper. I like to reward good service. When I was going to CSI, I paid my own tution and good tips kept money in my pocket.

As for me spending money I don't have, don't worry about that.

sure, if it goes to a good cause like college tuition, but realistically 99% of furniture delivery guys are far from ever attending college and probably have not even graduated from High school (sorry if I offend anyone with this :o )

I wouldn't call that being cheap, it's just the way you grew up. No one should find fault with you in that.

We do tip too much in the US (I refuse to put money in a tip jar on a counter), but if I have good service, I will tip generously.

Even in Ireland, where it was not required to tip, I could not help but leave something for my bartenders.

exactly

the only time I had something delivered it was a sofa which is now 7 years ago... and they carried it in, took the plastic off and ran within 10 minutes. I put it in place and removed additional debris. I gave them 20 bucks

all other furniture I have was either handed down or I assembled myself... (yes I buy ikea furniture- bite me)

It really depends on where you order from. If you're ordering from Ikea, it's just getting dumped on your floor.

My drivers never expect tips, but if they're carrying shit up stairs or unboxing or any of that stuff, you have to show them cash.

Furniture guys lifting heavy shit around the house so you don't sprain your back... I'd definitely tip them $20 a man personally.

If they're a moving company however and are lugging shit like your fridge along with your couches... they should be allowed to shoot you in the meaty section of your asscheek if you don't tip them $50 minimum.
