A friend saw a screening at a big outdoor festival this past summer. Unfortunately, she doesn't recall much of it.

True, but I guarantee we won't be as disappointed.

Good point. I trust Wayne much more than I trust Axl.

I love the Lips, and I don't know if there is a more likable frontman out there than Wayne Coyne, but I'm going to go into this with kind of low expectations. I have a feeling it's going to be kind of a mess. Maybe I'll be surprised.

But it will be an interesting mess.
That's the difference (to me at least) between acts like the Lips and G&R, or Radiohead and Coldplay. When the Lips or Radiohead put out something that may be considered a misstep, it's usually because they're attempting something new or different, and it's fun as a fan to figure out what they're trying to say.

I wish they had worked on that last album for another 4 years ....
Very excited about the movie. It's been at least 6 years since we first heard about it. Happy to finally have more then a few stills.

From the way it was covered in "The Fearless Freaks", there wasn't really a script and they were just making it up as they went along. I think that's why it took so long to come out. That, and the fact that the lead (Drozd) was a junkie who they were afraid might die at any point during filming.
Oh, and if you're a Lips fan, see this (http://www.amazon.com/Flaming-Lips-Fearless-Freaks/dp/B0007NN6J2/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1224764917&sr=8-1) if you haven't already.

I read in an interview that Steve was at a Williamsburg party and heard Soft Bulletin for the first time. He was so floored by the album that he immediately packed his stuff and drove to that mecca of acid-fueled art, Oklahoma City, just so he could be involved in the project.

I always thought Wayne would be a great guest on RnF, and I'd love to hear Ron interview him.
Earl, could you get on that?

I love Wayne but he might be a bit too out there for RnF. I'm thinking how David Lynch was on the show with that spacey meditation talk and it fell flat. Wayne might be similar. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong and Ron and Wayne would hit it off. Now that Fez is back, he might have some weird connection with WC.

Wayne isn't as "off" as his music and onstage demeanor implies. He's smart, down-to-earth, and well-versed in R&R history. In other words, a perfect guest for R&F.

From Pitchfork: (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/146924-flaming-lips-unveil-mega-deluxe-mars-package)
Phew! Okay, let's recap. As that genial weirdo up there-- Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, as you know-- noted, his Lips will offer up a "mega deluxe Christmas on Mars package" through their webstore for a limited time. In addition to the DVD of the long-awaited film and a CD of its score, those who opt for the fancy package will receive a popcorn box with "real Flaming Lips popcorn stuffed inside of it," an "Eat Your Own Spaceship" bumper sticker, a replica of the tickets from the screenings of the film earlier this year, trading cards of the band's members, and a t-shirt. [Via Wired's Listening Post]
The first 1,000 such sets will get their popcorn box autographed by the band, and packaged at random in ten of those initial 1,000 will be a golden ticket that will get you VIP admission to the band's New Year's Eve gig in Oklahoma City. And with that, I believe we now have our dictionary definition of "mega deluxe".
In addition to the standard and mega deluxe editions of Christmas on Mars, there's also a vinyl version coming our way. In addition to the film, you'll get the score on a Martian green LP, plus a white 7" sporting some seasonally-appropriate selections and the band's take on Spacemen 3's "Lord Can You Hear Me" (later recorded by Spiritualized as well). All incarnations of Christmas on Mars are due November 11 from Warner Bros.
In other news, the Lips led their March of 1,000 Flaming Skeletons through the streets of Oklahoma City over the weekend, and, naturally, it was amazing. The band also interpreted NBC's tri-chime theme for a forthcoming series of promos. And they're apparently playing a hometown show on New Year's Eve, if that silly bearded fellow up there is to be believed.
Christmas on Mars vinyl edition bonus 7":

A2 Lord Can You Hear Me
B1 It's Christmas Time Again
