An OTC anaesthetic, like Chloroseptic, will help with the pain, but if you don't hit your throat exactly right it makes your soft palate feel like a flap of plastic.
The lozenges are easier to deal with, but they don't last as long.
You can also try Ludens, but they're effectively hard candy.

The reason we treat strep throat with antibiotics is because strep throat, left untreated, can cause rheumatic fever, an inflammatory condition that can affect the heart and other tissues. Treating strep throat with antibiotics does not decrease the duration of illness (maybe by a day in some studies), but it does dramatically decrease the incidence of post-streptococcal rheumatic diseases.
If you think you have strep throat, go see someone and get a strep test. If it's positive, they'll treat you, if not, they'll recommend an antiinflammatory medication like ADVIL (if there are no reasons NOT to take it, like stomach ulcers, or bleeding disorders...talk to your doctor). Since sore throat is almost always due to inflammation in the pharynx, the use of antiinflammatory agents (again, if you can take them) is VASTLY superior to Tylenol or Chloraseptic or lozenges.
Most sore throats are not strep; most are caused by viruses or postnasal drip. The signs of strep are:
mildly elevated temperature (if any)
enlarged lymph nodes in the neck
sore throat (duh)
inflammation and pus on the tonsils (if you have 'em...much harder to see in adults)
Rapid Strep screens are reasonably accurate...the most accurate test is a strep throat CULTURE that takes 24-48 hours to get the result. Since you can take the antibiotics up to 10 days late and still get the effect, and since taking them really doesn't help the immediate problem (the sore throat), waiting the 2 days is acceptable.
Good luck, hope this helps.

Bad timing.
I just saw this on the news this morning.
A Minnesota man loses his legs after a case of strep throat. (http://www.wmtw.com/video/17776159/index.html?source=CNN)

I used to get frequent, bad sore throats as a kid. And only had strep throat once, when I was 8. I don't remember it hurting.
Once, in high school, I had an ear infection or something that was so bad I couldn't swallow the antibiotics they gave me for it without the Chloraseptic. The Chloraseptic is a definite quick-fix, but it'll help you get the other stuff down.
And for post-nasal drip, instead of Chloraseptic I use hot water and lemon, my favorite tea or TheraFlu (only if I don't have to drive; that shit makes me loopy) ... not much works better than that. I hate post-nasal drip.

post nasal drip can kiss my ass. it's awful. and you're right, the Chloraseptic is definitely a quick fix, but it DOES work. not everyone can take the antiinflammatories, and they take 30-60 minutes to kick in. of course, you can use both :-)

and you bring up a good point...strep is still totally sensitive to penicillin. exquisitely sensitive, actually; it's weird with all the antibiotic resistant bugs out there, for some reason strep pyogenes has never figured out how to survive a penicillin attack.
