View Full Version : Playing Bass: Where to start?

I've recently become interested in picking up my first bass, and seeing what I can do. I believe that I have good rythim. I played drums for about ten years, but haven't played in a few.
Can anyone recommend a good starter bass maker or model? Not looking to get too crazy with price.
TIA.

Not getting too crazy with price...
My recommendation is to buy a USED bass. Something that if you decide it's not for you, you can sell and not lose too much(if any at all) on.
That being said, a USED Mexican Fender...which in my opinion are just as good as the Americans in some cases, would be a great starter. My suggestion is to go to your local guitar shop...or Guitar Center and sit and hold a few different ones in your hands.
The Fender Precision(which was the first electric bass from way back in 1951...and morphed, starting in 1957 to what we know today) is pretty much THE standard in electric bass guitar. A few years later came the Jazz Bass. These are Fender's two MAIN bass guitars.
Give those two a try and see which one works best in your hands. The Precision has a beefier neck and might be difficult for someone with smaller hands...if that's the case, give the Jazz bass a try. The neck is much slimmer and faster.
Hope that is a good starting point for you.
1. Get a used Fender(Mexican)
2. Try the Jazz and the P Bass to see what you like and go from there. There are obviously thousands of choices for basses but these two models tend to hold onto their value the longest.
3. Some other brands that are wortha try are Ibanez, Schecter, Gibson/Epiphone, and Warwick.
Any more questions...feel free to ask.

i agree. a used bass is a much better choice than a new one, just in case its not for you.
i would recommend an ibanez or fender bass to start. they are both very good basses, are plentiful, so the price isnt too high. ibanez basses are light as hell, and the neck is skinny and plays fast. i would look for something used on craigslist, or head to your local GC or other shop.
as for learning to play, sure you can just tune up and learn whatever songs you hear, but i would really recommend strongly sitting your ass down and learning theory. those boring ass scales and modes and keys... as zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz as they are, they will come back to haunt you when you sit with real musicians.
bass lessons are also a good idea. having a teacher will challenge you, yet make it fun at the same time. i fucked around when i had my lessons, and fucked around in college in my music theory class, and now regret every minute of it.
one more thing... dont go overboard... a saying i go by...
cant carry the rig ? cant play the gig.

Thanks so much for the great info.
I guess I'll hit up my nearest guitar store, and get a feel for what model I want. Is there a good used music store online that any of you have checked out? I can order from ebay, but I'd prefer a more direct store that will actually care or refurb the beast.
I kinda figured that it would be best to start out with some old school music to get my rythym down. I'm pretty good with my fingers, seeing that the only drumming I've been doing for the past few years is on my steering wheel, desk, etc. Not gay.

any advice on finger playing with right hand? I am a horrible bass player but like playing with drummer and guitarist friends. I start out trying to finger play like Geezer Butler but end up using a pick because my fingers get too tired. I'm looking for advice on angle of my hand or any other tips on how to keep my right hand fingers from getting tired. when I look at the Les Claypools, Larry Taylors, and Geezer Buters out there, they make right hand finger playing look so easy. I think i must be doing something wrong.

If you wanna play bass, pleeeease play BASS.
Meaning... do not play guitar on a bass. Do not solo. Do not show off. That isn't what bass is about. Play simply. Lay it down. Play solid. EVERYTHING hinges on that.
For every fuckin' noodlehead like Claypool or Geddy or Flea or whatver... there are thousands of players that lay it down. That's where you wanna be.
It's gonna be tempting to do something more "exciting" than just lay the foundation. Do not give in to that temptation. When you're alone in your house... it might sound a bit boring. But when it's worked into the full arrangement... BAM... it'll pay off.
Also... bass takes an amazing amount of hand strength. Work it out. Build it up. Put the time in.
Bass is the easiest instrument to fake but... the hardest to master.
There's a lot of movement in bass playing but, the key is to make it sounds like your NOT doing a lot of movement.
People who think Bass is "just playing the root" are fuckin' retards. They're also probably guitar players. Playing bass (well) is all about finding your moments. And even then... you probably shouldn't capitalize on those moments. Don't stick in fills or runs just because you haven't played any fills or runs in a while. Play the song.
Bass is the road that whole song drives upon.
Fills are like potholes. You lose the bottom. You lose the groove.
You want a smooth road. Potholes are f'ing ghetto.
Play everything ssssslowly. Get your fingers to play it with smoothness and confidence. Get the timing perfect and THEN you can speed it up. This ain't guitar. Ya can't flurry some notes. You land on the wrong note when you're playing bass, and the whole room will vibrate.
As for the instrument itself;
it doesn't matter.
(brag alert) I've played on dozens (of not hundreds) of recordings that you're quite familiar with and, for most of 'em, I used an 800 dollar Fender. Off the rack. No alterations.
Get a Mexi Fender. Or a Japanese Fender (the Aerodyne is my personal fave bass in the world). They sound the way Basses are meant to sound. They're easy to play. They're affordable.
Song selection:
Learn SONGS... not parts.
Don't just learn the intro to "Sweet Emotion" or "Billie Jean". Learn the SONGS. All that connective tissue from section to section is where the heart of the bassline lives. How smooth can you get it? How tight can you get it? How GOOD can you get it?
That's bass playing.
I look forward to getting updates on your progress.

There's a really good music store in Hamilton, NJ...not too far from Philly. (http://www.russomusic.com/)
Plus there is a Guitar Center in Cherry Hill, NJ.
If you find something...come back here to ask about it before you buy it...there's enough experience here to help you get exactly what you need at a good price.

I got my blirf coming up on December 16th, so I asked for a bass for my blirf/christmas gift. Figure I'd take advantage of the time of year. I'm so stoked. :smoke::smoke:
Now to figure out which one...............thanks for all of the suggestions.

Step one: try to play guitar.
Step two: fail.
Step three: play the bass.
Can't believe it took so long....
My advice is the same as everybody's. Learn the basics first. Get all of your scales and progresions nailed down before you start trying to get all Claypool or Stanley Clarke. Get a metronome (if not a cheap drum machine) as well. Playing bass without other musicians can get real fucking boring but it's the only way to get where you want to go.

Thanks for all the help, all of you! I requested a bass for my blirfday/christmas (9 days in-between), so I am looking forward to getting one. I handed people's suggestions to my musicly-inclined brother, so I am sure he will do good.
Hopefully. I'm so stoked. Will fill my need for a new drum set.

I'd start with the cello if I were you..
It's seems like because of it's size it'd be easier to handle and as for the look, it's just about as gay as any bass I've ever seen..
I'm sure the bass is still a good idea though,
that "Stray Cat" shit is bound to come back someday..
I'm selling this if anyone is interested.

It's a G&L SB1. It was the entry-level G&L when I bought it around '92. The sparkly purple is a bit much, but that's what happens when a 13 year old get to pick the color.
I presume you know about G&L--Leo Fender's company after Music Man. It's US-made in a pre-CBS factory in Fullerton. I played a lot of different basses when I was shopping, and I like it best. I remember the Hammer I played was also nice, but it was a bit more money.

Can anyone recommend a good starter bass maker or model? Not looking to get too crazy with price.
My recommendation is to buy a USED bass.

geno, you should see if furie is interested in selling his bass.
any advice on finger playing with right hand? I'm looking for advice on angle of my hand or any other tips on how to keep my right hand fingers from getting tired. when I look at the Les Claypools, Larry Taylors, and Geezer Buters out there, they make right hand finger playing look so easy. I think i must be doing something wrong.
i would say practice is the only way to build up the strength in your hands. the reason those guys make it look so easy, is from thousands of hours of playing. i've been playing bass for years and still get the occasional hand cramp or blister on my finger.
