do you currently own a camera?
What kind?

Many will tell you to really understand and learn start with film, personally I disagree because unless you plan to work with film cameras later on you can learn faster and cheaper if you start digital.

also, if you don't pick up books to study, you do like the internet and there are so many forum and sites with tutorials out there.

when you say serious, how serious is serious?

Here's a nice lil photo taking tutorial, followed by some great tv ads.
Can you spot the politically incorrect one???

As Katja said, no need to jump into an expensive SLR to learn. Buy a decent digital and start shooting. Work on your subjects and POV. Go to the city and practice.
I take hundreds of shots every year. Once in a while I step in shit and get a few good ones. Trial and error.
I have a few medal winners from Ireland. But that place just naturally lends itself to great shots.

Experiment with your camera. Take pics in all different type of scenerios. Play with your results in photoshop. Constant use will help you pick up things and develope into quite a fine photographer in no time.

And stay out of cemetaries.

cemetery pictures can be very interesting, you may also find liking taking images of Gothic looking buildings and older cities and churches.

Since your current camera is a P&S and has no manual options you are best off trying to practice good angles and experiment with different light conditions.

If your budget allows get yourself a cheap digital slr and start working on manual settings and working with different lenses, apertures and experiment with DOP.

i know nothing about apertures.....thats what i wanna get to learn a lil more

unless you get a camera with manual settings it is hard to learn about apertures... especially when you don't like to read :D

There are some point and shoots cameras that have manual settings and also are able to attach lenses with an adapter. You can find digital slrs for 500 in a kit these days, just look up craigslist for a used one if need be.

Personally I think Canon and Nikon are easier to find a huge variety of lenses for, companies like sigma, tamron and many others make lenses for them at lower cost that the actual brand

~Katja~
10-21-2008, 06:37 PM
i believe my camera has a manuel setting

the model you mentioned doesn't from what I can see.
It has a scene mode where you can chose from a whole lot of settings, and it may not be a bad idea for you to play around with that and discover what each does and how it effects the exposure of your image.

in a manual mode you can chose all settings, iso, aperture, fstops....there is a lot to learn

mailman73
10-21-2008, 06:42 PM
yes yes there is much to learn .....thats why i was hoping trying to find someone to be hands on with i pick yhings up much much faster that way

~Katja~
10-21-2008, 06:44 PM
ok, hands on... post some pictures you have taken and we can help you figure out what is good and what is bad about them and what could be changed or done different... or post an image you would like to achieve and we can help you figure out what to do to get the results you are looking for.

Take LOTS AND LOTS of photos. Though I love film, I really wish digital had been around when I was learning. The cost of taking a lot of photos went from expensive, to free with the advent of digital.

~Katja~

hmm, these were taken with a powershot sd600.

first image I think another angle that does not show the buildings in the background and also doesn't crop the top out could make the shot more impressive. had you had a slr you could make the focal point also stand out more by changing your dop , shoot at an aperture under 3,5 and the grass and background will pretty much be out of focus and leaving the focus on the main object.
I would also adjust contrast levels in this picture.

I dont think he is as serious about it as someone who really wants to be a photographer.

I know.
I also don't want anyone to think that my opinion really matters :D

I have to say though, your images from cemeteries could be way more impressive if you are able to play with light. Make the angels look more peaceful and the gravestones kinda more mystic and dark if ya will... if you plan to continue working with that material as your main objects, chose different times of day, late afternoon or early morning can be great. fog over the cemetery with the sun coming out can give you a natural mysterious background to work with.

the sun setting on an angels wing can make it appear it to have sort of a halo and make it more innocent, peaceful and holy.
