How is it possible this isn't a bigger news story? The ref in this video clearly looks to me like he is seeking out the player and then making the tackle. By no means does this appear to be an accident.

Yeah I posted this in the college football thread yesterday, people seem to be ignoring it for the most part and I cant figure out why, some think it was an accident, others think the ref is senile, while more think it was just someone that wanted LSU to cover the spread.

I think the reason its not a bigger deal is that they scored anyways on that series, you can bet your ass that they would have raised hell if they had been stopped.

I read earlier that the QB was trying to cut back at the last second and the Ref was just defending himself. i think he could have put his hands up to push the QB instead of delivering a forearm to the chest. If they wouldn't have scored on that drive this would be a HUGE story.

I would have believed that if it wasnt for the ref following him down the line the lowering his shoulder into the garcia before hitting him.

I saw it on the news earlier. They said there was a short investigation and ruled out any foul play on behalf of mister referee.

Yeah college football draws millions every year, so much that the NFL stopped their thursday night games since college thursday night games out drew them in the ratings.

If there were to be a college football playoff, it would dwarf any playoff ratings for the NFL but yeah youre right college must suck cause you dont like it.

I think the main reason was because they went ahead and scored, but then lost the game, now if this was the reason they lost the game it would have been a huge story.

I wonder what Rodney Harrison thinks of that hit, he plans on being a ref after his career is over (which happened last night).

Hey Harrison I know you've done a lot of horse steroids in your career but Garcia for USC ( as in University Of South Carloina ) is not the same as Sanchez for USC ( University Of Southern California ).

Everybody else feel free to enter Mexican/Hispanic joke here.

NFL Thursday night football starts up again November 10th, Broncos v. Browns.

The 2008 Super Bowl did a 43.3 rating, while the BCS Championship did a 14.4.

So much for that.

The ref was a former player:

So it turns out the umpire who delivered the much-clicked hit to Stephen Garcia at the LSU 5-yard line during Tigers' win over South Carolina Saturday is no stranger to bringing down ballcarriers in the open field: Wilbur Hackett Jr. was a Parade All-American out of Louisville and a three-year starting linebacker at Kentucky from 1968-70, where he was the first black captain in SEC history. The conference won't say whether Hackett will be back on the field this weekend, per its usual policy, but he won't be facing any discipline:

... the SEC office believes Hackett was protecting himself and plans to take no disciplinary action on the veteran official. Rogers Redding, the conference's coordinator of football officials, reviewed the tape of the play and thought it was inadvertent contact.

"Garcia changes his direction just a tad, which ties up the umpire just a tad and makes it look a lot worse than it really was," SEC spokesman Charles Bloom said.

Of course, we didn't have to wait long for the inevitable evolution of one of the most-viewed YouTube clips of the weekend.

It should be noted that the impact of this gaffe on the game was zero: Carolina scored on a 4th-and-1 dive a couple plays later to go up 17-7 heading into the half, after which they punted four times and turned the ball over twice en route to blowing the lead. USC held the ball for all of 2:13 in the fourth quarter, losing seven yards on seven plays. Rather than worrying about any complaint, the Gamecocks will be spending their time this week figuring out the blitz after giving up a season-high six sacks.

Guess he had a flash back, like old veterans do when they think they see "charlie".

Whats your point? Most people only look at the actual championship and that was on what, on tuesday or wednesday? The super bowl is on a sunday and then people call in sick, if you think it wouldnt kill the NFL ratings you are fucking crazy. Besides the NCAA would have 4 weeks of games leading up to this instead of just the two days leading up to the final game, college is the last bastion of real sports and the pros are just spoiled bitches that get to go home to their mansions win or lose.

I think they need to do it, the fans want it, fuck the bowls, nobody cares anymore.

I do believe that the colleges kinda care.
