Obviously a tough loss, but this was not a Red Sox team playing at 100%. Not to make excuses, but clearly Papi hasn't been right since his wrist injury. Beckett was absolutely pitching through pain, the guy was stretching his right side after every pitch. No Mike Lowell, which hurts the team in so many ways; defensively You lose a FANTASTIC Gold Glove 3rd baseman, forcing your excellent 1st baseman to play the hot corner. No disrespect to Youk (the guy is unbelievable and did a great job at 3rd) or Kotsay (who also did a great job at 1st) but a healthy Lowell at 3rd and Youk at 1st is the clear situation of choice. That said, you can't keep letting a series go to 3-1 or 3-0 without it catching up at some point. And when injuries occur, others have to step up, I'm looking at you Jed Lowrie.

Hopefully, they work everything out with Tek in the offseason, and the core of this club can come back strong in '09.

I'd love to see tex here, but that would mean lowell would need to go. Would be sad to see. I also think wake's gotta go another sad thing but having him on the team is hampering our ability to groom Tek's replacement. Tek 2 yrs 10 mil?

Wak has to be done and another starter needs to be in place.
Papi is not been the bat of past and they should take real hard look at a replacement for next season.
Tek should be signed for a two year deal and give Cash more work.
They are always my team of choice.

Nah, Wake (healthy) is cheap and good for 15-17 wins. I want Tek mostly for his smarts behind the plate, not his bat.

Timlin, Byrd, Casey, Kotsay, Lugo = thank you and goodbye.

I agree with everything but Byrd. He is a servicable 5th starter/long reliever. You can never have enough pitching.

Pitching

Byrd - gone.

Timlin - gone.

Wakefield - Resign him to the 4 million option in a heartbeat.

Fielders

Casey - he may as well be gone since they didnt use him anyways.

Cora - not really needed with Lowrie emerging.

Crisp - I think they should trade him now while his value is up. Ellsbury struggled a bit in the postseason, but it was his first full season and he may have run out of gas a bit.

Kotsay - the only way I can see him coming back is if Crisp is traded. Then he becomes the super utility guy, spelling Ellsbury and Drew in the outfield.

Lugo - as much as I would like to see him gone, I dont know how they get rid of him without eating pretty much all of his contract.

Varitek - Do they really have any other option than to resign him ? Who is out on the market that is any better ?

Free Agent Additions I Would Love To See

Derek Lowe - He has said Boston is at the top of his wish list and I would love to see him back again. He is probably going to want more money than a guy who would be a #4 should warrant though.

Mark Texiera - I know its a long shot, but he would be a perfect guy to put behind Ortiz. The price is probably going to be way too high to get him though, then you also have to figure out what to do with Youk or Lowell.

Tek is staying for his handling of the pitchers, they need to build up their bench though for late innings. No way Tek or Kotsay should be hitting in do or die at bats.

Varitek is staying in Boston, because the catching market sucks.

Short of trading for Gerald Laird, who will be available for a trade from the Rangers, there's nothing else out there worth their attention.

I was looking at the Red Sox organization today. They're in pretty good shape, in terms of payroll, even for a high budget team.

The way I see it, they have the following issues/priorities:

1) Sign Varitek.

2) Decide what they want to do between Lugo and Lowrie. Lugo has a lot of contract left, which is probably unmovable, unless the Red Sox eat the majority of it and basically dump him. Can they platoon the two? Would Lowrie benefit from starting '09 in AAA?

3) Restructure their reserves. Casey, Cora, and Kotsay are gone. Cash may get non-tendered.

4) Crisp or Ellsbury? Crisp played better down the stretch, but Ellsbury has more upside. Yet, Ellsbury also has more trade value.

5) Figure out the back end of their rotation. Beckett, Lester, Dice-K will be the first three. Do they fill from within with Buchholz, Masterson, or Bowden? Do they dump a ton of money on C.C., or a little bit less to get a guy like Lowe back.

All in all, though, not too much to worry about. I'd be surprised if they went after Teixiera.

Unless they gave up Ellsbury, Masterson, or Bowden, I'm not sure why the Rangers would do that

One guy that may become available through trade for them, that hasn't been talked about yet on the Hot Stove because the team is still playing, is Carlos Ruiz from the Phillies.

The Phillies have another starting catcher ready to take over next season. Ruiz isn't great offensively, but he's very good defensively and calls a good game, and he's significantly younger and cheaper than Varitek.

Plus they wouldn't have to give up a lot to get him.

• The Boston Red Sox are among the clubs who have done some background work on Detroit left-hander Dontrelle Willis, indicating the Tigers' preference for trading part of what last winter had been such a promising deal with Florida. Detroit needs a shortstop after cutting ties with Edgar Renteria, and a Willis-for-Julio Lugo swap would help each club unload a bad contract and help fill a need. Willis is due $22 million over the next two seasons; Lugo is owed $18 million over the next two seasons, plus he has a $9 million option for 2011 that vests with 2,400 plate appearances between 2007 and 2010 and 600 plate appearances in 2010.

I wouldn't mind seeing this deal go down. Lugo needs to go elsewhere and Willis is still young enough to be able to turn things around.

I could see Lowell being sent to the Rangers as part of a package for one of their catchers, along with maybe Bucholtz or Pauley.

That would allow Youk to go back over to third and Texeira plugs right in.

Why does everyone keep insisting they need to re sign Varitek? Doesn't he pretty much become expendable with the reaquisition of Bard and Mirabelli (who's pretty much only there to handle Wakefield)?

I understand the love for Varitek, but at this point, he's a rotting corpse

(using Bard's 07 stats because I don't have a subscription to use PECOTA and he was injured much of 08)

Varitek OPS+: 73 (and If you want to be fair and use Varitek's 07 stat's too, his OPS + in 07 was 103)
Bard OPS+: 107

Varitek EqA: .237 (from .272 in 07)
Bard EqA: .275 (and in 06 it was .328, better than any EqA Varitek has EVER put up)

Varitek VORP: -2.0 (dead last on the Sox, down from 07 when it was 22.3)
Bard VORP: 23.5

Varitek is also 36 years old, and Bard is 30

Scouting Report: Offensive-minded catcher with 20-25 home run power potential and good plate discipline. However, his patience at the plate has led to leaving his bat on his shoulder a bit too much. Takes advantage of mistake pitches. Doesn't make contact on a consistent-enough basis. Has been somewhat pull-happy historically. Behind the plate, Kottaras' glove skills have been called into question in the past, including his ability to throw out runners, his game calling ability, and his basic fundamentals. However, he's a very hard worker and takes to developmental coaching well, and as such his skills have improved during his time in the Sox system. His game calling ability has certainly improved, as the PawSox staff has grown very comfortable with Kottaras behind the dish. On the other hand, while his arm is strong, his throwing motion still lacks quickness, and he only throws about 20% of runners out. Good at blocking balls in the dirt, and gets to bunts and fly balls well. Has extended experience catching knuckleballers.

I dont know how much I like this kid. A lot of things to fix for someone who is already gonna be 26

Bard's got a risk of injury, but I think it all depends on whether you want Kottaras playing in Pawtucket every day or in Boston playing every once in a while...I think Boston can afford the latter (especially since he catches knuckleballers), and I think I would rather take a chance on what Kottaras can potentially offer you since Varitek is getting close to the end. Its like when the Canadiens used to sell off their older veterans to struggling teams for really high draft picks while they still had some value.

He's caught four no-hitters, but his bat sucks.

Anyone the Sox are able to get as a catcher for this year probably isn't gonna hit much more than Varitek. Hopefully they will have enough offense from the rest of the lineup to makeup for the lack of hitting from the catcher's spot.

If Tek can be signed to a reasonable contract (not too much $, not too many years) and the Sox can trade for a good catching prospect to bring along in the next couple of years. I'd be happy.

They are the most pretentious bunch of people in the entire world. They think stats guys are people who "don't watch the game", yet they use pseudo stats like "MVP awards" and "all star game appearances" to back up their "arguments" about how great a player is. They elevate "scrappy" (aka white) players like Erstad and Eckstein to mythical status and talk about guys like Manny Ramirez and Vlad Guererro like theyre basically "children" incapable of hard work and playing the game "the right way".

We did that about 50 times and it finally came back with 4 of the best seats available "general admission - no seats" fucking standing room only.

I tried about a half dozen games and got the same result with all of them, yet the website still says that there are no sold out games yet, and I have no doubt that as I am watching the games on tv this summer, I'll be seeing commercials telling me that there are still tickets available to most games.

Jason Varitek has reached a two-year agreement with the Red Sox, SI.com has learned. The captain decided to return after many twists and turns in negotiations.

The 36-year-old catcher, who has served as Boston's official team captain since 2005, is coming off of the worst offensive season of his career, hitting just .220 with 43 RBIs in 131 games.

as a yankees fan it pains me to say that i think i like boston's offseason more than the yankees. i'm a fan of sabathia but he's got an opt-out in year 3 so its basically a three year contract because no-one who's had an opt-out has ever not used it. texiera is great but not 180 mill great and im figuring burnett to be a more expensive second coming of carl pavano and likely will have more years on his contract than games started.

the sox however snagged penny and smoltz and saito and baldelli, the tazawa signing, the ramon ramirez trade, heck even bringing tek back and the minor league deals to me look more impressive and potentially more successful than the yankees dumping the 400 million on three players.

I really wasn't surprised that they didn't make big moves, considering they did not have a lot of holes in the team. Adding Smoltz and Penny gives them pitching depth, which they are banking on.

I really like the Baldelli signing, since Drew cannot play everyday, and Bay will need a day of here and there. He should be good to pinch hit and be backup.

They are obviously depending on their pitching depth and gloves to keep them in it all year. This is going to be a team that relies on pitching and defense more than sheer offense.

Another rough, close loss.

But how cool was it that after all the cry-babying about an obvious mistake (Beckett's throw at Abreu's head when a late time out was called), and the 4 ejections, and continued crying...
The Sox, who didnt satisfy the angels attempts to turn it into a melee, just settled right down and hit consecutive home runs to take the early lead!

Now, I'm no fan of throwing at heads, even when it's only POSSIBLE that it was a mistake, people can get seriously hurt of course. But when it's an obvious mistake, basically caused by a late call, and no malice intended... all of those antics were damn entertaining, but unnecessary.

Okay...things should start getting a little easier now.

Dude, that was a two-seam fastball. For a pitcher with Beckett's control it's pretty hard to lose the handle on that pitch "by mistake".

drjoek

Come on Chris you cant be serious, that Becketts pitch was a mistake are you?
Beckett is a punk with pinpoint control and always has been. That pitch was deliberate meant to hit him, whether it was meant to be at his head is up for deliberation but he meant to throw at him.
Red Sox fans used to use this same arguement to defend Clemens and Pedro back in the day.

Dice K has "arm fatigue".

Strange that someone who pitched 170 pitches a game, and pitched through the entire WBC would have "arm fatigue".

And it's Dice K; he lets up 5 runs in the first, but probably would have thrown 6 no-hit inning (but 17 walks) after that.

2 years ago Schilling had a no-no going at Oakland into the 9th. They broke that one up too. I had hoped for a reversal of fortune for Wake. I was pulling a Ronnie B when I turned the game on in the 7th by saying "Come on. Let him have this. He's come close so many times and he's been nothing but a class act."

I didn't hear his comments after the game but I'm sure Wake said something to the effect that he was glad to give his team a much-needed win and his bullpen a much-needed rest. That's why Wake is one of my favorites.

ChrisTheCop

Actually, Wakefield is quoted as saying, "Take that bitches! I'm on the worst team in baseball and I muthafuckin rule Oaktown!!!" Further stating, "Fuck you Mike Lowell, " referring to the third baseman's error which ended the no hitter for Wakefield. When asked by reporters if it was fundamentals that got him through 7 innings unscathed, he said "Fundamentals are a crutch for the talentless." Manager Terry Francona had asked the knuckleballer to sit out the 9th inning. Wakefield replied, "You're fucking out. I'm fucking in!"

Also, DiceK has been placed on the 15 day DL.
